The Heliand: The Saxon GospelFrom Oxford University Press

A spirited retelling of the Gospel story in a Germanic setting, the ninth-century A.D. Old Saxon epic poem The Heliand is at last available in English in Ronald Murphy's graceful new translation. Representing the first full integration and poetic reworking of the Gospel story into Northern European warrior imagery and culture, the poem finds a place for many Old Northern religious concepts and images while remaining faithful to the orthodox Christian teaching of the Gospel of St. Mark. Accessible to students of medieval and comparative literature, Murphy's introduction and notes provide valuable insight and a cultural context for this unique masterpiece.

Review
"One of my own teachers, Father Murphy gives us a look at how the Gospel was spread into Central Europe. What he shows us is a different kind of warrior epic, and a look at how civilization began in a savage place."--Tom Clancy

"The specialists will appreciate Murphy's fine and very readable version, in view of the difficulties he had to overcome in creating an adequate modern text that can be used in the classroom. Students will value it as an exciting text for the modern interest in crosscultural studies."--Theological Studies

"A great translation. I recommend it highly."--S.L. Clark, Rice University

"An excellent translation which captures the spirit of the times and the people who listened to this unique blend of the traditional gospel message with the trappings of the heroic sagas which formed the other part of their literature. The text is readable and understandable and yet representative of the original. The notes on the translation were invaluable as is the material in the appendices."--Charles W. Nelson, Michigan Technological University

"Very useful for demonstrating the pagan and heroic influence on religious work."--G.N. Berqquist, Creighton University

"Fascinating addition to medieval literature in translation. Notes and introduction very helpful in considering cultural influences on translation of the Gospel into Saxon. The English version itself is clear, yet captures the Saxon style well."--Elizabeth L. Rambo, Biola University

"A valuable resource for the history of Christian piety and for the study of how Christianity was affected by transplantation to Northern Europe. Having such works available in translation is a real boon to teaching and to scholarship."--Richard Kieckhefer, Northwestern University

"Richly annotated. A provocative companion for students working with the original text."--Ray Wakefield, University of Minnesota

"A vivid retelling of the Gospel story from an early Saxon perspective. Ideal reading as a component of a culture and civilization course in translation....Also for the general reader who is interested in Germanic history of the dissemination of Christianity."--David J. Parent, Illinois State University

"An interesting and remarkable text, full of possibilities for defining epic machinery, and a welcome addition to the Old English canon."--R.E. Stratton, University of Alaska, Fairbanks

From the Back Cover
The Heliand has a unique aura in the history of world literature. Its contemplative integration of Northern-European magic, sooth-saying, wizardry, fatalistic warrior virtues, personal mysticism, and the Christian gospel story give it a compelling power and charm. The Heliand was written in Old Saxon over a thousand years ago in the first half of the ninth century by an author whose mysterious identity has remained unknown.

New emotions for a familiar story
By sunnytgolem
This book is great. It's going to be my 2nd time reading through it. I felt some new emotions while reading this 9th Century reimagining of the gospel story. I kind of chuckled for a minute when I read that the woman who asks Peter if he knew Jesus after he was arrested ... is described as unattractive. Another great part that is different and that I really enjoyed was when Peter cuts off the ear of one of the soldiers sent to arrest Jesus. It was described as a full force strike to the side of the head -- leaving a mortal wound. Before the attack, Peter's emotion of being enraged is also described well.
So as other reviewers have said, it is a poetic work aimed at conveying the gospel message to a warrior culture. There's also a theme of being without doubt in Jesus as "Chieftain." The scenes with John the Baptist are also great. Like I said, I felt new emotions for this familiar story. The important messages are clearly conveyed however, so the added stuff is kind of seen with the understanding that it was meant to add the extra pazazz -- much like how they do in the movies. And it's a great read that I recommend to all. 5 stars.

The All-Wielder's Peace-Bairn
By Bruce Burns
Father Murphy's translation of a complicated work is superlative. Before I say anything else I must say that his presentation of the Christian Gospel outreach to the Saxons is easy to read, with useful footnotes, and a natural flowing translation. Father Murphy treats this effort of Christian evangelism with a great deal of love.

(I have collegiate level training in history, linguistics, and English so I should probably throw a little bit more detail into my review)
The Heliand is the first major attempt to reach the 9th century Germanic Saxons in their own cultural terms. Father Murphy had quite the challenge: to incorporate meanings from the popular Latin harmony of the Gospels paraphrased into Old Saxon culture and language while then translating both of those items into contemporary American English. As a history nerd, a linguist, and a church history student, I was so impressed by Murphy's work that I had to thank him personally.
Hardcore medievalists may take issue with various minutia of Murphy's choices, but I think we history nerds tend to fall in love with our first impressions and translations of ancient works. Murphy's translation is to be commended for communicating feeling behind word choice in several places when a more wooden transliteration could have sufficed. For non-linguists, that means that Murphy's translation is going to be more emotionally real and present than more technically-obsessed authors.
I highly recommend it for any undergraduate student or layman.
Anyone who would nitpick this work is probably at the level of reading it in the original anyway, and should go do that. I have seen more mechanical translations of the work, but it takes a good German scholar and a clergyman both to really present the heart of the material.

The Gospels in a mirror
By Kindle Customer
My husband is an artist and to check his painting, he looks at it in a mirror because he can see problems that are invisible when you look at it the regular way. I found the Heliand to be like that.

My original aim was to see how distorted the message was to the Saxons. It is distorted, but I found it to be extremely powerful for that very reason. It makes you think. When Mary wraps the infant in clothes and precious jewels, it makes you stop short. It couldn't have been like that. But it should have been; Jesus was that precious. I loved the poetic images like the meadows of heaven. And there is great joy and feeling in the telling that are pretty well missing from the traditional gospels. This is a story told by a master storyteller.

We are almost as far removed from the warrior society of the Saxons as we are from the even more distant world of Jesus. Reading the story transposed from one culture to another makes you look at the changes and think about what is important and what is just details. Like looking at your painting through a mirror.

From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up–Hiding out in the wilderness of Colorado, Max Ride, 14, and her ragtag family of mutant kids think they&'re safe from the clutches of &The School,& a secret government lab that has erased their memories and turned them into human/bird creations. When Angel, the youngest of them, is kidnapped by the &Erasers&–cruel half-man/half-wolf enforcers for &The School&–Max and several of the kids set off in search of her. Despite outwitting them in several instances, the Erasers are able to intercept them. But all is not as it seems when Max is released from her confinement only to be told the secret of her origin–that she was created to save the world. The story is based on Patterson&'s popular &Maximum Ride& series (Little, Brown), and Lee does a superb job of translating his text into attractive manga-style illustrations. Although the narrative is a bit slow at first, the action quickly picks up and is bound to keep readers turning the pages. Bridging the gap between contemporary YA fiction and manga/manhwa, Maximum Ride is a fine first choice for sci-fi/thriller-heavy collections.–Dave Inabnitt, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

From Booklist
Patterson’s fantasy-thriller series is readily adapted here into a manga format. This opening volume introduces a handful of avian DNA–enhanced youths whose communal freedom is threatened when one of them is kidnapped and held captive in an evil lab. Teenaged Max and her charges, who include slightly younger Fang, blind Iggy, and the little kids Gasman and Angel, leave behind a nearly idyllic retreat and go into a world where they are threatened by paramilitary beasts. They learn soaring techniques from birds of prey, find temporary comfort with a small family of “regular people,” and are imprisoned by the man whom they thought was their foster father. All this plotting is presented with boisterous and nicely stylized images that purposively exploit manga features, postures, and symbolism. Young manga fans will find this a fast read, and suspense readers may be engaged by the combination of visual and textual elements. The volume ends on a cliffhanger that will entice readers to seek the next in the series. Grades 7-10. --Francisca Goldsmith

If anything, I had seriously misconceptions when it came to Maximum Ride. For once it was written by James Patterson, world renowned author of murder mysteries that were turned into movies usually starring Morgan Freeman to name a couple. When I saw this down at the library in the young adults section, the immediate thought that came flying from my head was, "Somebody misplaced this book in the wrong section!" I thought this because I knew James Patterson for writing books for ADULT audiences only, so was irked that someone would leave the book in the wrong section of the library. Of course, it irked me so much that I took a chance and snatched it off the book shelf to read it myself (odd no?). After several weeks I finally got around to reading it. Without a doubt these pages DO FLY as the side panel of the book warned. The storyline surrounding the characters could be more well thought out; Its sort of hard for me to describe, but a short summary would be this: [Max and her band of brothers and sisters (the flock) find themselves hunted by a organization from a place called The School after being ambushed in their hideaway home.

From there they find themselves constantly running for their lives while trying unravel secrets hidden from them]. The concept of children with the ability to fly (with the inclusion of Hollow Bones) with WINGS is a nice touch to the story; The flying scenes were written very convincingly. The description of the action unfolding the extremely short chapters were well detailed, the words unfolded in my mind smoothly, the pharagraphs constructed in way that you don't find yourself scratching your head trying figure out how'd that character end up in such a position and so forth.

The characters are stellar; From Max to Angel, these Teenagers, tweenagers, and kids are excellent reflections of their real life counterparts to a T. And the villains, while they make you hate them, are well written. They're never so predictable, or straightforward with their plans it makes you roll your eyes. And, yes, while this book leaves some things unexplained and the story does end quite abruptly, Max convincingly shushes that with a convincing teenage comment. Highly recommended reading.

Promising, but incomplete.
By Feathin
First of all, I've never read any other James Patterson books. I understand from the reviews that this is an advantage-- people who read "When the Wind Blows" and "The Lake House" seem to feel particularly cheated, because this book is a re-worked version of the story in those books but does not match up them. Without the hindrance of these preconceived notions, I quite enjoyed the story. Were it not for the huge flaw of the incomplete ending, I would happily give it 5 stars.

I listened to it in audio format, narrated by Evan Rachel Wood. I thought her narration was excellent and well-matched to the story. The story is marketed as a book for teens. I am an adult-- I chose it partially for my own benefit, as a science fiction fan, and partially to preview it for the possibility of handing it down to my own children.

As a parent, I found the content well-suited for a wide age range. Were it not for the problem of the ending, I would feel comfortable giving it to my 8-year-old daughter to listen to, and it wouldn't bother me if my 5-year-old son listened as well (though I don't think it would hold his interest). I particularly like the strong female protagonist. There IS violence-- the mutant bird-children protagonists are hunted by mutant dog-people and have several bloody fights. Most of it is fist-fight kind of stuff, but there is some gunplay as well. However, I did not find it gratuitous or unduly gory. There is death as well, but the death comes to "bad guys" and it too is not "gratuitous"-- it is treated somberly and with appropriate angst. Probably the most disturbing elements are those of the inhumane treatment of the children at the hands of the scientists who have genetically engineered them and raised them as experimental animals rather than as people. Most of this though happens off camera and is alluded to indirectly.

The big problem with the book is the fact that it doesn't really end. Well, it ENDS, but it doesn't FINISH. I am a long-time sci-fi and fantasy fan well-accustomed to double-digit series, but this is unfinished even by that standard. There is no satisfactory closure and no real answers to the dozens of mysteries raised in the story. I sincerely hope that the sequel resolves some of these mysteries and lives up to the wonderful promise of this part of this story-- I will certainly be buying the sequel as soon as it is available! However, for those of you not yet involved, I think I would recommend that you not start this one until there IS a sequel, and reviews telling you that there is some element of completion to the story!

This is the MAXMIUM RIDE of ALL books!
By jlostar
"If you dare read this story you become part of the Experiment. I know it sounds a little mysterious- but it's all I can say for now," - Max.

This eye grabbing, thrill riding, rollercoaster of a story catches the interest and imagination for all readers. Even if you hate reading, like me, you won't be able to set this book down! It's a thrill/ adventure based book written by James Patterson, author also of best selling When the Wind Blows. Patterson created a fantasy clashing reality book that is telling about six young experiments and there life.

Have you ever wished you could fly? Well the main characters in this book are six kid mutants from ages five to fourteen, Angel, Nudge, Gassman, Iggy, Fang and Max. The oldest Max, is the leader of the folk. These kids are a mixture of bird DNA and human genetics. All they remember is living in a lab, a lab of evil and hatred. This is the place where white coated people come and perform tests on them, hurt them, push them to a limit, and you are nothing but and experiment here even if you are half human. Through living in a lab they gained having powers that come to them as they grow older, such as far sight like a hawk, or being able to breathe under water (caused by tests). The whole reason why we know about these experiments is because they have been the only ones to escape.

With these six escapees they are trying to live with out being killed by the government and there helpers know as the Erasers. All they want is to live, live and know what this is all about, and who they are and what they came from. However, this is or should I say, they are not to be exposed, this is the government's little secret. But, not for long... because once your start reading this you are a part of their nightmare. This twisted mysterious nightmare that I could never figure out to the last paragraph.

If you enjoy a mysterious book that tests your limits of what is real and what can't be, then this is a book for you, for all- once your hooked there's no way out.

A Plato Reader: Eight Essential Dialogues (Hackett Classics), by Plato

A Plato Reader offers eight of Plato's best-known works--Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, Meno, Phaedo, Symposium, Phaedrus, and Republic--unabridged, expertly introduced and annotated, and in widely admired translations by C. D. C. Reeve, G. M. A. Grube, Alexander Nehamas, and Paul Woodruff.

The collection features Socrates as its central character and a model of the examined life. Its range allows us to see him in action in very different settings and philosophical modes: from the elenctic Socrates of the Meno and the dialogues concerning his trial and death, to the erotic Socrates of the Symposium and Phaedrus, to the dialectician of the Republic.

Of Reeve's translation of this final masterpiece, Lloyd P. Gerson writes, "Taking full advantage of S. R. Slings' new Greek text of the Republic, Reeve has given us a translation both accurate and limpid. Loving attention to detail and deep familiarity with Plato's thought are evident on every page. Reeve's brilliant decision to cast the dialogue into direct speech produces a compelling impression of immediacy unmatched by other English translations currently available."

...these ones are accurate. Stonemason or not, Socrates by no means speak like an educated Victorian. And if you must read only 8 of his many classic works, this is good enough a selection.

Beyond the Mask: Gordon Craig, Movement, and the Actor, by Irene Eynat-Confino Ph.D.

Eynat-Confino goes beyond the usual consideration of Craig’s purported theories of the actor, scenery, and the scene painter to get at the heart of Craig’s idea of theater.

She draws not only on the research of contemporary Craig scholars but on material hitherto unavailable—his writings and daybooks and the writings of friends. She ties Craig’s encounter with Isadora Duncan to a decisive modification in his notion of movement. To have an instrument more controllable than the actor, he invented the über-marionette, a giant puppet. Craig also invented the “Scene,” a kinetic stage, the “screens” that brought him worldwide fame were simply an adaptation of this concept.

Eynat-Confino argues that a scenario Craig wrote in 1905, here published for the first time, reveals a theosophical system like that of Blake, a system that was the main force motivating Craig’s artistic quest. In her final chapter, she carefully examines the psychological, aesthetic, and circumstantial factors that kept Craig from completing his work to bring “friendliness—humor—love—ease—peace” to the world.

High Life: A History of High-Altitude Physiology and Medicine, by John B. West

The history of high-altitude physiology and medicine is such a rich and colorful topic that it is surprising no one has undertaken a comprehensive account before. From the early balloonists to various high-altitude expeditions, culminating in the great feat of climbing Mount Everest without supplementary oxygen, the basic biological challenge of hypoxia has underpinned the human experience at high altitude. Of key importance in several areas of medicine including pulmonology, critical care, anesthesiology and cardiology, this topic is also of general interest to other life sciences such as biology and ecology, because hypoxia is encountered by many organisms throughout the animal kingdom.
High Life covers the topic from its earliest beginnings with the Greeks to the last two or three years, and highlights many geographical locations, such as China, Japan, India and Russia. Including 185 illustrations, over 800 references, and three appendixes detailing the chronology of main events, databases of high-altitude publications, tables of high-altitude locations, a list of classical books on the topic and narratives of classical and modern high-altitude expeditions, this book is a comprehensive reference text which should be of value to anyone interested in high altitude and hypoxia.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
The nature of the atmosphere in which we live has fascinated humanity for thousands of years. It had always been clear that air was necessary for life -- but why? Observations of the motion of the lungs and the beating of the heart slowly brought understanding of the intertwining relations among air, respiration, circulation, and life. When oxygen, the "vital principle," was isolated, its importance was appreciated immediately. People began to explore mountains, which they had long worshiped for their remote beauty and later feared as they experienced their dangers. The venturesome soon wondered why going to a high altitude -- on mountains or in balloons -- often made them sick. The history of these explorations is fascinating stuff.

High Life will delight scientists and historians. West is the leading authority on hypoxia, and this elegant book is a welcome extension of his collection of landmark papers, High Altitude Physiology (Stroudsburg, Pa.: Hutchinson Ross, 1981). It is meticulously researched and covers much of what you might want to know about the history of altitude sickness. It will be less interesting for most clinicians and climbers.

Among the attractions of the book are the many biographical sketches and rare photographs of the major players. West gives interesting details about little-known people like Thomas Ravenhill and Alexander Kellas, and along with occasional flashes of humor these details give life to the facts. The reader soon realizes how much the famous owe to the work of those unknowns who went before.

In the first four chapters of High Life, West takes the reader through early speculations and discoveries about the nature of air and barometric pressure and the growth of understanding of why high altitudes make people sick. I would have liked more excerpts from the ancient Chinese writings about air and about the circulation of the blood; they were nearly right more than 2000 years ago. One chapter details the early history of Mount Everest; another describes many of the summit climbs.

West describes the early balloon flights, in which a few men were taken to great heights (where some died), but gives little attention to the flights of World War I, when many men could fly high enough to be badly affected. Barely mentioned is the work on altitude that took place during World War I and that was a major stimulus to later research.

True to the stated purpose of the book, the chapter on illnesses caused by high altitude is historical rather than clinical. West comments on a few selected old and recent medical cases but says little about the rush of knowledge over the past 60 years. An important 15th-century description of mountain sickness and acclimatization by a Mongol chieftain is not included.

Another surprising omission is any mention of the microscope, the use of which, among other things, filled the last gap in William Harvey's theory. Also not described is the tortuous path toward the understanding that breathing and the output of the heart are automatically controlled. Far too brief is the history of how we learned that foods could be "burned" to produce energy without the body's being consumed. Birds and animals that tolerate high altitude -- often very high altitude -- are not mentioned.

No one can write a complete and accurate history of a subject: perception always contaminates reality. Facts are immutable, but those who describe them are necessarily selective. Even Edward Gibbon was sometimes wrong and not free of bias. It is not surprising that West has scanted some pioneers; I would have liked to read more about the ancient Egyptians and the Greek and Roman philosopher-scientists, as well as the 15th-century physicians whose work made possible Harvey's great explanation of the circulation. Gaspar Berti's water barometer is barely mentioned, and West gives all the credit to Evangelista Torricelli for the one we use today.

This rich book is enjoyable to read. Along with Herbert Hultgren's High Altitude Medicine (Stanford, Calif.: Hultgren, 1997), written for practicing doctors; Michael Ward, James Milledge, and John West's High Altitude Physiology and Medicine (2nd ed. New York: Chapman & Hall Medical, 1995); my own Going Higher: Oxygen, Man and Mountains (4th ed. Seattle: Mountaineers, 1998), written for mountaineers; and of course Paul Bert's encyclopedic Barometric Pressure (Paris: G. Masson, 1878), High Life is a good base for a library on mountain medicine.

" ... the book is well produced and well written. It does not demand an excess of specialist knowledge, and it will provide fascinating reading, not only for applied physiologists, but also for others with a passion for climbing." Canadian Journal of Applied Physiology (vol.25, 2000)

"This is the finest historical review of the movement of man into high altitudes....The book is an excellent reference for a study of the history of high altitude operations and basic reduced pressure physiology....Overall, igh Life is an excellent historical reference. Review

"This is the best guide to learning how to listen. It's an outstanding book in every way, well written, and full of great ideas. "--Elliott Cheney, University of Utah

"Take Note turns the conventional music appreciation book on its head--to invigorating effect. Gone is the old "music history lite" approach, and in its place is an invitation to listen deeply and interactively. By guiding students through a varied and attractive musical repertory, the author challenges them to open their ears to how music expresses profound meanings. The result is the skill of attentive listening, one that will enrich the experience of all kinds of music for a lifetime."--Larry Hamberlin, Middlebury College

Take Note
By Z. M. Ridgway
"Take Note" is a new development in music appreciation textbooks. Most older courses were aimed at college students who were not music majors but who had had private music lessons for years. These books assumed a spectrum of knowledge that these students would have acquired through their years of training, but more importantly they assumed that students had already acquired the skill of listening.

"Take Note" is aimed at the college non-music major who needs to be taught to listen in a focused and intelligent way. The music is presented and re-presented cyclically through the text, with different aspects of it discussed each time (cf. Jerome Brunet's spiral of learning) and reinforced; graphs correlate to the music in real time to provide a visual aid to a student's listening.

The textbook is by a well-known musicologist who has for many years been teaching students of all levels to love and understand music.

Not Your Typical Music Textbook
By Gravid
Easily the most readily understood general music textbook that I've ever run across and/or used in my classes, both university and high school. Not only did it help light a fire in many of my students, but it also rekindled my personal interest in the music and overall culture of both the Medieval and Modern periods, each of which is a very hard sell to a reformed and admittedly Romantic tuba player. In 20 years of teaching, I have yet to come across a better combination of representative tunes and clear relevant commentary. This textbook brings music to life!
