THE GREATEST STORIES EVER TOLD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By John Wilson
"True Hallucinations" remains as much of a sentimental, "favorite book" as I have; if I do still in fact have just one. I met Terence, albeit relatively briefly, at a conference in NYC in 1996, and his eloquence and ideas absolutely changed the trajectory of my whole life. This is a work that is an edge of your seat adventure tale that unfolds within the most gorgeous prose style you can possibly imagine. The fact that it is a true life story makes it all the more moving(especially in light of his recent death: April 3, 2000)and mind blowing. I've read, and reread this a few times over the years, and it still moves me as much, as any work I have ever encountered; probably even moreso.
"Archaic Revival" is the best "one-stop" place to find an overview of many of McKenna's major ideas. The book contains interviews, essays etc. on so many different subjects that I doubt that I could recommend a better book; unless it would be "True Hallucinations". While "True Halluciantions" is a story/novel, "Archaic Revival" is a more varied piece; though equally challenging and moving in it's own ways. The fact that these are available as a "twofer" is just great. Don't miss out. Order a couple to give out as gifts ! I did.

Pioneer Explorer Documenter Author Intellectual Genius

Some day the future race of humans (should we survive) will hopefully have access to texts such as McKenna's. So few have gone so far into that 'other world' discovered (in part) through the use of psychotomimetic and psychedelic chemical compounds. Building upon and expanding immensely the "doors of perception" concept that originated with Blake and was popularized by Huxley, McKenna examines the tryptophans in particular and the true glimpses into the unknown that they can offer. If you have ever wondered about the existence of a separate plane of reality, and/or are curious about recent scientific experimentation with psychoactive hallucinogens, do not miss this amazing individual and his valuable contributions to an obscure yet vital field of knowledge.

Birthright: The True Story That Inspired Kidnapped, by A. Roger Ekirch

"Ekirch out-kidnaps Stevenson in this thrilling, thoroughly documented story." ―Booklist, starred review

No saga of personal hardship so captivated the British public in the eighteenth century as that of James Annesley, the presumptive heir of five aristocratic titles and scion of the mighty house of Annesley. Kidnapped at twelve years of age by his uncle and sold into indentured servitude in America, James would ultimately escape after toiling for twelve years in Delaware, returning to Ireland to bring his blood rival, the Earl of Anglesea, to justice in one of the epic trials of the century.

Set against the volatile backdrop of Georgian Ireland, historian A. Roger Ekirch recounts the extraordinary family drama that inspired Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel Kidnapped "with dash and clarity" (Kirkus Reviews).

From Publishers Weekly
The dramatic tale of James (Jemmy) Annesley inspired Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped and four other novels. Now Virginia Tech history professor Ekirch (Day's Close) presents the intriguing, complex true narrative of the 18th-century travails of the rightful earl of Anglesea. Ekirch describes young Annesley's near abandonment to the Dublin streets through the greed-induced maneuvering of his father, Baron Altham, and Altham's mistress. Upon Altham's death, Jemmy's Uncle Richard perpetuated the lie that the boy was illegitimate and, later, that he had died. In 1728 Richard had 12-year-old Jemmy kidnapped and transported to the colony of Delaware as an indentured servant. After 13 years of virtual slavery, Jemmy escaped and returned to the British Isles. His claim to gentlemanly birth was endorsed by numerous former acquaintances, but denied by a few key individuals. Eventually, his cause was championed by Daniel Mackercher, a self-made Scottish merchant who dedicated his life to the defense of Jemmy's birthright. Lengthy and sensational legal proceedings resulted in a less-than-timely vindication of the claim. Confusing because of excessive use of frequently changing noble titles, Birthright is nonetheless a fascinating read. 26 illus., 3 maps. (Jan.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Ekirch, a history professor at Virginia Tech University, reanimates a crime dating back to the early eighteenth century, the crime that inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped. James Annesley, the heir to five aristocratic titles, had a startlingly hard early existence. His father, Arthur Annesley, the fourth Baron Altham, turned James (called Jemmy) into the streets of Dublin to fend for himself at the age of eight. Jemmy turned up at his father’s funeral four years later. Shortly after, his uncle had him kidnapped and shipped to Delaware, where he spent the next 13 years living as an indentured servant. The term kidnapping, Ekirch explains, originated in the seventeenth century to describe seizing a child with the intent of transporting him or her to the colonies to work as an indentured servant. Kidnapping was a misdemeanor under British common law; horse theft was a felony punishable by death. Jemmy’s escape, passage to London, and pursuit of his birthright, leading eventually to his vindication at the end of a famous criminal trial, form the backbone of this story. Annesley had to prove his identity with virtually no evidence: he had no scars or distinguishing birthmarks; written records of his birth were nonexistent; and the science of fingerprints, photographs, and DNA was far in the future. Ekirch also illuminates such subjects as the position of wives and mistresses in eighteenth-century England; the causes of the sharp rise in mortality that threatened the great peerages; and the realities of indentured servitude in the colonies. Ekirch out-kidnaps Stevenson in this thrilling, thoroughly documented story. A perfect mix of true crime and real-life adventure. --Connie Fletcher

Review
Ekirch’s book brings the story brilliantly to life and vividly reconstructs the violent and debt-ridden world in which disreputable aristocrats operated.

Ekirch's book brings the story brilliantly to life and vividly reconstructs the violent and debt-ridden world in which disreputable aristocrats operated.

Ekirch does a masterful job of detailing these events in this meticulously researched and highly readable narrative. Concisely written and well documented, this fascinating book will appeal to both serious readers and general history buffs. "

An engrossing familial and legal tale told with dash and clarity. "

Ekirch s book brings the story brilliantly to life and vividly reconstructs the violent and debt-ridden world in which disreputable aristocrats operated. "

A splendid story of low skullduggery and high politics, and Roger Ekirch deserves congratulation for disinterring it. As befits an eminent historian, his research is detailed and the evidence carefully weighed. "

More fascinating than the fiction spin-off. . . . In combining an inherently exciting tale with surprising facts, Ekirch has come up with one of the year's most intriguing history books. "

The story of Jemmy Annesley, kidnapped at 12 and shipped from Dublin to the American backwoods in 1728 by his wicked Uncle Richard, certainly recalls an early episode in the story of young David Balfour. But the tale of Annesley's picaresque adventures is excitingly dramatic in its own right and Professor Ekirch has researched it with academic relish as a real-life oddity that is no stranger than fiction. --Iain Finlayson"

This gripping book tells a remarkable true story. . . . Roger Ekirch expertly illumines eighteenth-century societies in the British colonies and the seedy underside of Georgian Dublin. His masterly, sympathetic and racy reconstruction of the adventures of Jemmy Annesley at last fleshes out the truth behind the tales told by Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson. --Toby Barnard, University of Oxford"

An extraordinary work of history by one of America s most imaginative historians, a true story more fascinating than fiction. --Gordon S. Wood, professor of history emeritus, Brown University"

Fascinating true story of kidnapping, greed, and corruption among the British aristocracy
By Allegra Huston
Ekirch's book tells the true story which inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write his classic book KIDNAPPED. Truth, as often, is wilder than fiction. The heir to a title and fortune, neglected by his drunken father and vicious stepmother, is turned out to live on the streets and then kidnapped and sold, basically, into slavery. I didn't know that the indentured servants that came to America when it was still "the colonies" were often sent against their will, and in effect owned by whoever bought them on the block. Any bad behavior added to their sentence, so they were in effect sold for far longer than the seven-year term. It took Jemmy Annesley something like twenty years to gain his freedom and return to Britain to claim his title and inheritance.
The law cases that ensued, the corruption of the courts and the British rule of Ireland, take your breath away. Ekirch does a brilliant job of probing the seamy lives of dissolute noblemen, and making you feel the appalling injustice of the times. What happened to Annesley was, to some degree, normal--it was a scandal only because it involved the aristocracy. The true scandal is the corruption of the legal system and the rottenness of the society that created it--which is also the society that gave birth to the United States.
The story of this one mistreated, orphaned, abused boy, who became a man determined to reclaim what was his, becomes a gripping insight into all of 18th-century Anglo-Irish society, top to bottom. It's a terrific book. I couldn't put it down.

The Ultimate Cold Case!
By Jonathan F. Remley
Ekirch's account of family lineage gone wrong is the ultimate investigation into crimes of another era. He approaches the subject matter with careful objectiveness - and the reader quickly realizes why - as just about everyone is carrying around some serious moral baggage! It's easy to root against Uncle Richard, but harder to fully embrace Jemmy as a hero worthy of our deepest sympathies. Sure enough, the outcome doesn't disappoint. I won't spoil it, but no one (except maybe the lawyers) rides into the sunset unscathed. Indeed, truth is stranger than fiction. This stuff is far more compelling than the glitzy, empty calorie crime dramas of today.

Aside from simply being a first class yarn, perhaps the most compelling reason to read Birthright is to appreciate how a top historian carefully untangles the events of the distant past. Ekirch succeeds in weaving a compelling mosaic of lives lived and events transpired almost 300 years ago. It's nothing short of amazing. Museums house the artifacts of the times, but a great historian's work is the only true portal into the collective ethos of these bygone societies. From the intricacies of the English legal system, to the weather patterns (he clearly visited all these locations!), to the time it took for a speedy horseman to convey news from Dublin to London (5 days), Ekirch has compiled an incredible piece of research and understanding. Bravo!

From Publishers Weekly
This affirming prose poem asserts that peace begins with simple gesturesAacts in which any child might take part: "someone/ is/ visiting/ a/ friend/ who/ is/ old"; "someone/ is/ planting/ a/ tree." Some of the peace-promoting acts involve crossing cultural boundaries, such as whacking a pi?ata or learning to master chopsticks. Thomas (Putting the World to Sleep) quietly makes readers aware of the kindness and pleasures around us. Her spare text and repeating phrasesAeach page begins with the words "Somewhere today.../ someone/ is..."Aplay off well against the warmth and specificity of Futran's photographs. In some, the multicultural families and kids smile happily for the camera; in others, they seem entirely absorbed in their activities. The numerous pictures, varying in size, proportions and quality, show children horsing around, celebrating or concentrating (a few appear washed-out or slightly blurry). The book is a bit like the good deeds it describesAa modest step in the right direction; the author wisely averts didacticism through her use of cogent, everyday examples. Ages 5-9.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2?A greeting card of a book illustrated with full-color photographs of multiethnic children and adults. The premise is that all over the world, people are helping one another, and in doing so, they are bringing about peace: "Somewhere today...someone is being a friend instead of fighting" or "someone is fixing old toys to give to new friends." Each double-page spread provides an example of a positive action in large type, along with several candid photographs of the individuals involved in bringing it about. A doctor cares for an infant, a boy teaches his sister to ride a bike, two youngsters visit an elderly woman, a family plants trees, etc. The book is visually appealing and offers a proactive, if somewhat simplistic, approach to creating a better world.?Lisa Von Drasek, Bank Street College Library, New York City

From Booklist
Ages 4^-8. Terribly earnest in his approach but direct in intent, storyteller and schoolteacher Thomas writes simple, declarative sentences: "Somewhere today . . . someone is being a friend instead of fighting . . . someone is teaching his little sister to ride a bike." Each sentence occupies a full-page spread, with a number of photographs of children illustrating the activity mentioned. The photographs themselves, which range from clear close-ups to artfully blurred or angled shots, show a reassuringly varied cast of children and adults of many races and cultures. For "joining a friend's celebration," children break a pinata; for "learning to do things in a different way," a boy learns to use chopsticks from his Asian friends. A slightly hokey ending, in which children are shown reading this very book "and thinking about making the world a better place," is in tune with the book's gentle didacticism. GraceAnne A. The Essential Peirce: Selected Philosophical Writings, by Charles S Peirce

A convenient two-volume reader's edition makes accessible to students and scholars the most important philosophical papers of the brilliant American thinker Charles Sanders Peirce. Volume 1 presents twenty-five key texts, chronologically arranged, beginning with Peirce's On a New List of Categories of 1867, a highly regarded alternative to Kantian philosophy, and ending with the first sustained and systematic presentation of his evolutionary metaphysics in the Monist Metaphysical Series of 1891ETH1893. The book features a clear introduction and informative headnotes to help readers grasp the nature and significance of Peirce's thought system. Bringing together all the writings needed for the study of Peirce's systematic philosophy and its development, Volume 1 is ideal for classroom use. Volume 2, covering the period from 1894 until Peirce's death in 1914, will highlight the development of his system of signs and his mature pragmatism.

From Library Journal
Often considered the greatest American philosopher, Peirce produced no comprehensive treatise; until now, students and scholars had to read through widely scattered papers to gain an overall view of his thought. This anthology remedies that situation by offering a full representation of his work, including several hard-to-obtain items. The editors have arranged the material chronologically, so that the development of Peirce's ideas can be traced. Essays discuss such topics as the philosopher's new system of categories, pragmatism, signs, scientific progress, and evolutionary cosmology. The excellent introduction stresses Peirce's growing adherence to realism and his doctrine of signs. This volume ends in 1893; a second will cover the period from 1894 to his death in 1914. It is highly recommended for scholarly collections.

Foundation material for how we think
By Donald Steiny
I came to this book because I was inspired by "the Metaphysical Club" to learn more about the roots of pragmatism. The book is challenging. The Metaphysical Club points out that William James did not understand Peirce at first, so it is a bit much for mere mortals. It is especially daunting because the first essay is written with respect to Kant's categories, not something I know off of the top-of-my head.
However, as the books progresses many of the things that are assumed in the first essay are explained. For instance Peirce explains in detail what he means by a sign.
He discusses cognition, or consciousness and shows that logically our internal experience is based on external stimulation. It soon becomes impossible to ignore the fact that you are reading the works of a logician and that that is where he is coming from. But even though you might have to reread parts several times, once you master the arguements, it is satisfying indeed.
According to the introduction of the book and references, Peirce was influential. William James, Oliver Wendel Holmes and John Dewey were all influenced by him. Modern cognitive psychology owes much to William James. Psychology took a different direction through psychoanalysis and then behaviorism but cognitive psychology is now the dominate paradigm. Because of this Peirce has renewed importance.
My advice is to read it through once and not feel you have to get everything and the reread it because he explains things later that he assmes you know earlier.

The First Pragmatist
By Jeffrey Rubard
Charles Sanders Peirce was an American original. Aside from a few years in a logic post at the then-new Johns Hopkins University, the enmity between Peirce and President Eliot of Harvard kept him out of academia for life; he worked for the US Geodetic Survey for decades, then lived hand-to-mouth off meager earnings from writing and the help of his friend William James. However, he was one of the most prolific philosophers in American history: the uneven Harvard edition of his collected papers runs to eight large volumes, and the critical edition being prepared by Indiana University (from which the material in this two-volume selection is drawn) will contain scores of volumes when finished. Peirce was not only prolific but incredibly wide-ranging; at a time when the state of scientifically-minded philosophy was parlous, he applied himself to logic and probability in significant ways, and recognized early the deep significance of Charles Darwin's evolutionary theories.

This first volume of *The Essential Peirce* contains Peirce's early *Monist* essays ("Some Consequences of Four Incapacities Claimed for Man", e.g.) which should be highly instructive for anyone who has learned to criticize the "metaphysics of presence", and the famous essays he wrote for *Popular Science Monthly* where he introduces the basic principles of pragmatism, though he does not call the view by that name (the history of the movement's name, including Peirce's own adoption of the term "pragmaticism" to describe his own version of it, is addressed in his Harvard Pragmatism lectures in Volume Two). Writings on the evolving science of probability -- one of Peirce's distinctive doctrines is "tychism", that chance is a real and active power in nature -- round the volume out nicely. Peirce's influence on James and John Dewey, who had a "historically effective" role in the consciousness of the United States in the 20th century, is unquestionable; if you are somewhat philosophically sophisticated, you will be additionally able to appreciate the searching depth of Peirce's post-Kantian "Guess at the Riddle" as a standalone item.

You will not find any of his cult-classic writings on semiotics here; he had not yet developed his theory of "icon, index and symbol" and his complicated ten-fold distinction between signs -- even Volume Two of *The Essential Peirce* slights this side of Peirce's efforts. Still, if you have the slightest interest in American intellectual history this is a must-have.

Essential Source for Understanding Peirce and Modern Thinking
By Fred Cheyunski
Like another reviewer, this one wanted to learn more about Peirce based on reading other books. From this vantage point, “The Essential Piece” is particularly useful. The book’s helpful Foreword and Introduction by the Editors supplements the background found in Louis Menand’s “the Metaphysical Club.” Pierce’s articles in this collection inform both Menand’s book as well as Barbara Minto’s “the Pyramid Principle: Logic in Writing, Thinking, & Problem Solving” (see my reviews).

Namely, the Editors summarize the biographical information of Peirce and go on to explain the increasing interest in him as a significant source of our modern approaches to ideas and thinking. For instance, they mention his influence such as on C.K Ogden and I.A. Richards’ “Meaning of Meaning” and later on Karl Popper whose “Logic of Scientific Discovery” had so much to do with shaping the 20th century pursuit of knowledge. They also indicate the wide breadth of Peirce’s logical, arithmetic and graphical work with its systematic nature, emphasis on dependency hierarchies and the evolutionary growth of ideas.

The various chapters highlight the development of Peirce’s thought, e.g.” Questions Concerning Certain Faculties Claimed by Man,” “How to Make Our Ideas Clear,” “Design and Chance.” and the “Architecture of Theories.” One Peirce article that this reviewer found especially informative was “Deduction, Induction, and Hypothesis;” this piece appears to be Minto’s source for describing the hypothesis – rule, result, case – approach first applied in consulting by McKinsey & Company. Another favorite was “On the Algebra of Logic,” first published in 1880, which provides the earliest graphic and explanation that this reviewer has seen to date of the now prevalent “4 quadrant” presentation so frequently used by consultants.

To better understand such contributions to our modern approaches to ideas and thinking consult this essential Peirce reference

The Politics of Islamic Law: Local Elites, Colonial Authority, and the Making of the Muslim State, by Iza R. Hussin

In The Politics of Islamic Law, Iza Hussin compares India, Malaya, and Egypt during the British colonial period in order to trace the making and transformation of the contemporary category of ‘Islamic law.’ She demonstrates that not only is Islamic law not the shari’ah, its present institutional forms, substantive content, symbolic vocabulary, and relationship to state and society—in short, its politics—are built upon foundations laid during the colonial encounter.

Drawing on extensive archival work in English, Arabic, and Malay—from court records to colonial and local papers to private letters and visual material—Hussin offers a view of politics in the colonial period as an iterative series of negotiations between local and colonial powers in multiple locations. She shows how this resulted in a paradox, centralizing Islamic law at the same time that it limited its reach to family and ritual matters, and produced a transformation in the Muslim state, providing the frame within which Islam is articulated today, setting the agenda for ongoing legislation and policy, and defining the limits of change. Combining a genealogy of law with a political analysis of its institutional dynamics, this book offers an up-close look at the ways in which global transformations are realized at the local level.

Review
“This book is the work of a gifted scholar with the capacity to work painstakingly through a mass of detail, do comparative work in multiple locations, and draw significant theoretical conclusions. Detailing a genealogy of Islamic law and ‘mixed’ Islamic legal regimes, Hussin offers a sophisticated analysis that places these in the context of colonization and outlines the ways they have been shaped by an ongoing engagement between colonial powers and local elites.” (Mahmood Mamdani, Columbia University)

“The Politics of Islamic Law takes a very fresh approach on understanding the roots of modern Islamic laws. It is a very well-researched and well-argued work. This book is a must-read for the students and experts of Islamic law. Since Hussin has traced the roots of Islamic laws in the colonial state and polices instead of Islamic theology and history, it may raise controversies. However, it is not possible to ignore this scholarly work.”
  (Washington Book Review)

“The Politics of Islamic Law is a remarkable book, both for its breadth and lucidity. The archive that Hussin plumbs is vast (Malaya, India, Egypt) and her analysis sharp. In clear prose she shows the various ways in which British colonial rule transformed Islamic law to fit the requirements of the modern state. This is an important contribution that unsettles a number of assumptions about Islamic law and its modern history.” (Saba Mahmood, University of California, Berkeley)

Hamlet (Arden Shakespeare: Third Series), by William Shakespeare

This self-contained, free-standing volume gives readers the Second Quarto text.  In his illustrated introduction to the play’s historical, cultural, and performance contexts, Neil Taylor presents a thorough survey of critical approaches to the play.  He addresses the challenges faced in reading, editing, or acting a play with the depth of content and tradition that Hamlet possesses.  He also establishes the historical and cultural context in which the play was written and explains the arguments about the merits and deficiencies of the First and Second Quarto and the First Folio.  Taylor points to the many novelists, both men and women, whose work refers to or bears commonalities with Hamlet, to suggest an ongoing to need to resolve "the continuing mystery of Hamlet" in print and on stage.  An appendix contains the additional passages found only in the 1623 text, and other appendices on the editorial process, the traditions regarding the act division at 3.4/4.1, casting, and music are also included.

Middle aged and finally able to read Shakespeare
By Gilgamesh
I cannot more highly recommend this particular book, No Fear Shakespeare's Hamlet.

I am approaching 50 years old and my only real experience trying to read Shakespeare was in high school where we were assigned roles in class and made to read, without comprehension, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Cesar. In the interim, I tried watching a few plays and dragged my kids to see the play Taming of the Shrew, which they hated because they couldn't understand the language nor the plot. Rather than becoming a Shakespeare hater, I've always felt inadequate and dumb for this huge hole in my education.

My current inspiration to try Shakespeare again was my desire to try and help my high school aged son become more educated and cultured than I have been.

I tried first with the Folger annotated editions of Shakespeare. They look excellent and define the unfamiliar words, but I still could not make sense of a substantial portion of the dialogue. I guess maybe I'm just dumb, I don't know.

Anyway, I saw good reviews about this No Fear series, and I ordered several. So far I have read the modern English translations of Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and The Tempest. While I feel a bit like I'm 'cheating', I actually have really enjoyed all the plays and at least now I know the plots and the characters and even some of the more subtle themes. I can't answer the complaints that the translations don't adequately translate Shakespeare's meanings. There are a few side notes that point out double meanings and things like that, though there are not extensive footnotes or sidenotes.

To answer those who rate these books one or two stars, my answer is that they are at least a door into the world of Shakespeare for those of us unable to navigate the originals on our own. And they only take a couple of hours to read. It's not like this is a lifetime commitment or anything. The book only costs five bucks, so why not invest a couple of hours and read it? And, for me, I liked the plays so much that I AM now going to dig out the Folger editions and read the originals, with the No Fear books available in case I get in trouble. These modalities of trying to appreciate Shakespeare are not mutually exclusive.

Well, hopefully that's helpful to someone. I wanted to write this so that people would know that these books are not just for lazy students hoping to avoid reading the originals or somehow 'cheat' in their English classes. I'm not a Shakespeare scholar or teacher and never will be, just an ordinary guy, but for me, these books were the window of opportunity that I had been searching for. Two thumbs up, most definitely.

Best Shakespeare Edition Available: Arden
By Drew
The Arden editions of Shakespeare are the best available. While they cost a lot more than the standard cheap editions, they have so much more. The Folger editions (probably the most widely available editions of Shakespeare) have footnotes that are quite general and never do they have enough. In addition, they really don't have that much extra information on the play--only a small essay analyzing the modern issues of the play. The Arden editions are truly the scholarly editions of Shakespeare. Ninety percent of the time that I have a question on the text, a footnote provides more information. In addition, a lengthy introduction is included. Everything is documented. While at this point I don't care that much about how the quarto version of Hamlet said "no", when the folio version said "so", it's nice to know that if I have a specific question, the answers in there. My thoughts on Hamlet: Don't fret about understanding the material, just dive in. Shakespeare offers interesting plots to the beginners and vivid prose to pick over to the advanced scholar.

Hamlet: A Fresh Look at the Danish Prince
By MACLEAR
The folks at Arden decided to bring forth all three versions of Shakespeare's revenge (or anti-revenge) tragedy so that those who care can study the similarities and differences between the texts for themselves. I teach many Shakespearean plays and using the "bad quarto" of 1603 in conjunction with the oft used conflated text is an eye-opener for students who get a chance to truly engage in the text when comparing, say, Hamlet's third act soliloquy of the Folio (1623) version with the often maligned 1603 version. As usual, the people at Arden do an excellent job at editing the works. This is an excellent companion piece to the recently released third edition of Hamlet by the same editors of the 1604 Quarto text. A welcome addition to any Bardolators library.

"Gabriel García Márquez meets Umberto Eco meets Jorge Luis Borges for a sprawling magic show." --The New York Times Book Review

A New York Times Bestseller

Barcelona, 1945: A city slowly heals in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, and Daniel, an antiquarian book dealer’s son who mourns the loss of his mother, finds solace in a mysterious book entitled The Shadow of the Wind, by one Julián Carax. But when he sets out to find the author’s other works, he makes a shocking discovery: someone has been systematically destroying every copy of every book Carax has written. In fact, Daniel may have the last of Carax’s books in existence. Soon Daniel’s seemingly innocent quest opens a door into one of Barcelona’s darkest secrets--an epic story of murder, madness, and doomed love.

From Publishers Weekly
Ruiz Zafón's novel, a bestseller in his native Spain, takes the satanic touches from Angel Heart and stirs them into a bookish intrigue à la Foucault's Pendulum. The time is the 1950s; the place, Barcelona. Daniel Sempere, the son of a widowed bookstore owner, is 10 when he discovers a novel, The Shadow of the Wind, by Julián Carax. The novel is rare, the author obscure, and rumors tell of a horribly disfigured man who has been burning every copy he can find of Carax's novels. The man calls himself Laín Coubert-the name of the devil in one of Carax's novels. As he grows up, Daniel's fascination with the mysterious Carax links him to a blind femme fatale with a "porcelain gaze," Clara Barceló; another fan, a leftist jack-of-all-trades, Fermín Romero de Torres; his best friend's sister, the delectable Beatriz Aguilar; and, as he begins investigating the life and death of Carax, a cast of characters with secrets to hide. Officially, Carax's dead body was dumped in an alley in 1936. But discrepancies in this story surface. Meanwhile, Daniel and Fermín are being harried by a sadistic policeman, Carax's childhood friend. As Daniel's quest continues, frightening parallels between his own life and Carax's begin to emerge. Ruiz Zafón strives for a literary tone, and no scene goes by without its complement of florid, cute and inexact similes and metaphors (snow is "God's dandruff"; servants obey orders with "the efficiency and submissiveness of a body of well-trained insects"). Yet the colorful cast of characters, the gothic turns and the straining for effect only give the book the feel of para-literature or the Hollywood version of a great 19th-century novel.

From Booklist
Call it the "book book" genre: this international sensation (it has sold in more than 20 countries and been number one on the Spanish best-seller list), newly translated into English, has books and storytelling--and a single, physical book--at its heart. In post-World War II Barcelona, young Daniel is taken by his bookseller father to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a massive sanctuary where books are guarded from oblivion. Told to choose one book to protect, he selects The Shadow of the Wind, by Julian Carax. He reads it, loves it, and soon learns it is both very valuable and very much in danger because someone is determinedly burning every copy of every book written by the obscure Carax. To call this book--Zafon's Shadow of the Wind-- old-fashioned is to mean it in the best way. It's big, chock-full of unusual characters, and strong in its sense of place. Daniel's initiation into the mysteries of adulthood is given the same weight as the mystery of the book-burner. And the setting--Spain under Franco--injects an air of sobriety into some plot elements that might otherwise seem soap operatic. Part detective story, part boy's adventure, part romance, fantasy, and gothic horror, the intricate plot is urged on by extravagant foreshadowing and nail-nibbling tension. This is rich, lavish storytelling, very much in the tradition of Ross King's Ex Libris (2001). Keir Graff

The Critic's Rave Reviews are all Correct
By Edward W. Jawer
The enthusiastic praise and adulation which critics have accorded the english publication of Carlo Ruiz Zafon's first novel, "The Shadow of the Wind", may trouble the reader who begins the book, worried that little might match his expectations. After all, reviewers who compare a writer's work to a combination of Umberto Eco, or Jorge Luis Borges, or Gabriel Garcia Marquez, or other literary giants, compel the reader to expect to be transported when they open the book.
Not to worry.
Once started, the single downside for the reader will be knowing that the experience must end. The plot is quite complex, the jacket cover's synopsis will give the reader all he needs to know. The important thing is to read it slowly and carefully.
A mystery story, a fairy tale, a love story (actually several love stories), a passion for literature, a treatise on politics, a bawdy tale, with love, hate, courage, intrigue, loss of innocence, humor, cowardice, villainy, cruelty, compassion, regret, murder, incest, redemption, and more. Add to this delicious mixture characters who come alive, and whose thoughts and feelings you will feel deeply.
What a great pleasure to discover; an extraordinary first work, one which towers over the endless and repetative volumes which inhabit today's "Best Seller" lists. Read it, and become hypnotized.

As good as a Caráx novel
By A. L. Spieckerman
Zafón's storytelling skill is quite remarkable, his prose doesn't just take you into the story, it completely transports you. In only a few sentances. Zafón crafts a world of remarkable visions and events--just a little bit magical (as all the best stories really are) but grounded in characters who live, breathe, and merrily cavort off the page and into your heart.

But Zafón isn't just a strong storyteller with an exact sense of prose (and my compliments to the excellent translation!), Shadow of the Wind connects to people, it's almost a watershed. It's been a long time since I've been so excited about a book. I tell -everyone- to read it: best friends, my mom, relatives, people I work with--they're all hearing raves from me. And I don't do that lightly, but this book is joyous and sad, heartfelt and even wise.

But most important of all is that Shadow of the Wind is true. It's one of those rare books where you don't just hear 'their' story, it becomes your story as well. To loosely quote Caráx, "it holds up a mirror and a window to your soul," because it teaches us about who we are--about the communities that bind and define you.

And every single moment Fermín Romero de Torres was 'on screen' I had the biggest grins on my face, truly one of the great characters of literature.

I've not a single criticism or reservation about this book, and that puts Zafón on an extremely short list with Mark Twain, Frank Herbert and Orson Scott Card.

How You See It Depends on What You Bring to It
By Steve Koss
That it's so tempting to read SHADOW OF THE WIND is a tribute to clever marketing. Comparisons to Marquez, Borges, and Dickens mix with gushing tributes from Stephen King and references to best-sellerdom in Spain. The literary come-on is hard to resist.

In the end however, the way you respond to this book will depend on what expectations you bring to it. If you anticipate a reading experience worthy of those heady literary comparisons, you'll be sorely disappointed - Zafon is little closer to Garcia Marquez than Stephen King is. The closest he comes is having the temerity to give a minor character, a boyfriend of Beatriz Aguilar's, the family name Buendia, the prolific clan from ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE. If you plan, however, on a fantastical romp through a mid-century Barcelona converted wholesale into a gothic swamp of ghosts, shadows, haunted houses, malevolent, revenge-seeking, jilted lovers, swooning virginal maidens, improbably picaresque characters, unbelievable coincidences, parallelisms, and twists of fate, and a host of pseudo-Freudian relationships, you'll love every minute.

The story line of SHADOW OF THE WIND is so complex and convoluted, it's nearly impossible to relate in less space than the book's own 487 pages. Suffice to say, the premise is drawn from the search of a teenaged boy named Daniel for the truth about the fate of Julian Carax, the author of a mystery story (also named "Shadow of the Wind") that Daniel has adopted and read after his bibliophilic father takes him on a "coming of age" excursion to the aptly metaphorical Cemetary of Forgotten Books. Carax has apparently written a number of other books, all of them commercial failures, yet someone has been traveling Europe to find and burn every extant copy of Carax's works.

With twists and turns that would make the Minotaur's head spin in his Labyrinth, Zafon spins multiple parallel tales of Platonic love, blind love (both literal and figurative), failed love, enduring love, filial love, forbidden love, and unrequited love. Through it all looms the mystery of Julian Carax. Is he alive or dead? Who is burning his books, and why? Who is the char-faced phantom? Why does the evil Fumero seek such hate-filled revenge? Will young Daniel ever find his true love?

Zafon's book could be easily parodied or brushed aside as little more than a Barbara Cartland romance, but his writing is better than that despite being too often over the top. From the opening page where Daniel describes his mother's death as "a deafening silence I had not learned to stifle with words," Zafon mixes searing images and thoughtful observations with engagingly quirky characters such as Fermin Romero de Torres who capture the reader's imagination and heart like 20th century Sancho Panzas and Dulcineas to Daniel's idealistically questing Quixote.

Unfortunately, these pluses are offset by unrelenting and heavy-handed atmospherics in which every page is marked by clouds, shadows, mists, flickering candles, twilights, smoke, rubble, ruins, twisted heaps, blood, and "glutinous darkness," and the like. Florid prose abounds: "The white marble was scored with black tears of dampness that looked like blood dripping out of the clefts left by the engraver's chisel. They lay side by side, like chained maledictions." Readers must also contend with two laughably miraculous conceptions, both occurring after first night trysts (a tribute perhaps to the ineffable virility of Spanish males?), and an unfortunately anachronistic request by a Barcelona doctor in 1954 for a "brain scan" of an injured Fermin (page 288).

Net net, SHADOW OF THE WINDS is entertaining escapism with modest literary pretensions. Enjoy it for what it is, but don't expect it to be more than it is.
