The 4th Edition of GPS for Land Surveyors Is Detailed yet Understandable

Jan Van Sickle's GPS for Land Surveyors book provides an excellent resource for anyone teaching or learning about GPS, surveying, or related geotechnologies. It strikes a good balance between providing enough technical details about such complex topics as multipath errors, how to draw baselines, and how to calibrate a site, but yet the book at the same time is approachable and understandable. Jan provides much insight into biases and error in GPS signals and procedures, and how to manage error. Thorough treatment is given to receivers, methods, coordinate systems, datums, geoids and ellipsoids, real time kinematic GPS, differential GPS, and much more. The color illustrations are very thoughtfully done and enhance understanding. This is the 4th edition of the book, but the new edition is definitely worthwhile - it provides a great amount of additional and updated material, including GNSS initiatives around the world. Each chapter contains a set of quiz questions and answers, which aids the book's utility as an instructional tool in a university setting or for those working through the book independently. It is not a "given" to find someone so knowledgeable about this topic and yet be such a good instructor, but Jan Van Sickle is both, and both of these traits are quite evident in this book.

An Excellent book for GPS/GNSS Surveying

This book is a great resource for students wanting to become land surveyors and land surveyors that plan to use GNSS receivers in their workplace. I taught a class on GPS Surveying at a technical college using his 3rd edition and plan to use the 4th edition now. Updates to the 4th edition have been added to stay current with changes in technology. I believe the book provides the reader with a comprehensive understanding of the topic. The format of the book is well organized. The illustrations are excellent. I think this is book would make an excellent addition to anyone's library for surveying. I strongly recommend this book for all interested in a better understanding of GPS/GNSS technology.

Dr. Van Sickle's 4th edition of the "GPS for Land Surveyors" book is one of the top ten in the market. As usual for Dr. Van Sickle, the book provides a great amount of precious information to the reader as well as insight into the future technology of the GPS/GNSS world. One of the most amazing things for this books is the language. The GPS/GNSS technology and science is not easy, but it is presented in a way that is easy to understand. The presence of high quality illustrations, mathematical equations, and questions to answer makes this book one of the most valuable GPS/GNSS textbooks for Surveying and GPS/GNSS classes at the universities. Based on my personal experience I would say that this book is equally valuable for laymen, professional land surveyors, and students.

A Lodging Pioneer of Hospitality

My background is what academia refers to as "clinical" in nature and several years ago, I addressed several classes at the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality & Resort Management at the University of Memphis in Tennessee. Having taught as an adjunct professor for 20 years at three different colleges, I have always been comfortable as both an academic and corporate educator, facilitating more than 3,400 classes and programs.

The classes were interesting and as I was leaving, I spent a few minutes in the small museum type setting that includes some of Wilson's memorabilia. I was never employed at Holiday Inns, but living in Tennessee (then global headquarters for the brand) for more than 15 years certainly brought me into substantial contact with many people who had been. While Wilson was not a traditional hotelier by schooling or experience, he definitely influenced many business practices in franchising, brand support, standards and values.

Displayed in the lobby of the Wilson School of Hospitality & Resort Management at the University of Memphis are what he called his Steps for Success.

#10 included the title of his book: Remember that success requires "Half Luck and Half Brains". He uses his 20 Steps as episodes and illustrations. I found the content of this book to be quite interesting and not the frequent "bragging" that some biographies lean towards. Written by Wilson at age 83, he shares his "better way" of offering affordable lodging in understandable and practical lessons. The book also includes more than 100 photographs of family, business partners and unique scenes in the evolution of Holiday Inns in the days before the industry became involved in heavy mergers and the danger of the industry becoming viewed as a commodity.

Nice book!

Don't know why it is no longer in print. That is why I bought it used which I do not always do. The book I got looked like it was new and I love the cover. The story itself is true and informative though a little jagged (jumps around a bit).

This is a grat book! Must have for anyone into sustainable design or rural design and construction.

This is the English version of the original Spanish only book. The Barefoot Architect is a single volume book that covers every aspect of how to plan and construct rural central American (and South American) towns. From town planning, where to site buildings, how to build a house, or public toilets, a water powered wheel, or build a wheel barrow out of a 55 gallon drum, this book has it all. I'd bought the Spanish version years ago in a small bookstore in Mexico and was REALLY HAPPY to find it in English (as my Spanish isn't at all good). Dimensions all remain in metric, which is fine.

A great gift for anyone into these topics!

I've not been so excited since the first " Whole Earth Catalog"! Put this in your luggage and find spot on the globe and go build a village.

well the book arrived in a couple days. its mostly pictures very thick and arrived with out damage. this book was written in 1982 in mexico and later translated. it's very interesting but if you plan to build within the building codes in the US or any where that has building codes this book is not going to get you too far with your inspector. on the other hand it should be in every library and in every ecovillage. Survivalists and preppers, i would highly recommend this book to you.

"Viral Marketing: The Science of Sharing" continues the brilliance of the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute in the Marketing field. Karen Nelson-Field's book is an evidence-rich, fact-based look at online videos and what really constitutes success. The book is well written, brief, to the point, and an important addition to the (still understood, much hyped) field of viral marketing and videos. Highly recommended (disclaimer: I am a client of EB's, but no matter--this is a great book!).

Delivers insight of high value.

The work done by Karen Nelson-Field and her colleagues at Ehrenberg-Bass Institute is extremely important and should be read by anyone serious about marketing.

The reason why it's important is that in a fundamentally changed media landscape where there's a lot of new opportunities (i.e social media, realtime marketing, content marketing, big data etc) to place the brand in the hearts and minds to as many people as possible - and as frequent as possible - to achieve growth, it's easy to take shortcuts. Shortcuts that often are based on assumptions, intuition or poorly found correlation studies. Even worse - pure coping of a "viral success".

The fear of not doing the right things often leads to doing things poorly. This book can help you to both create a better strategy and a better execution of your marketing tactics - especially when it comes to creating content like social videos.
