Calligraphy, in some way, for Everyone

In expectations I cheated a bit since I had taken the book out of our local library first. Then having seen what was in it I had to add it to my library. While there are plenty of how-to demos this book has so much more. Besides the history of calligraphy there's a tremendous amount on application whether you're doing your own manuscript with drop-down ornamental caps to use of calligraphy in the modern world.
If you're interested at all in "fancy" writing or looking for a way to emboss your notebook with gold leaf, this book is for you. As with many books that cover this broad a range of application there will be sections that may not interest you. But overall you'll be very pleased with your purchase of this book. I certainly am.

Great at what it does

First, let me make it clear that I love this book! It is primarily a reference, with basic step-by-step directions and tons of photos for a wide variety of techniques and alphabets.
Though the first section begins with "Basic Penmanship," I'm not sure I would not recommend it as a first book. However, I think it would make a great second book. It includes enough detail to allow you to develop a basic working knowledge of just about any of the techniques or alphabets, expanding your skills. Once you have identified a particular area of interest, I would recommend pursuing additional information. (This is not an in-depth work-just an overview!)
The second section is a sort of gallery, with photos of a wide variety of professional work and a short discussion of the artist's intentions or process. The work depicted is often breath taking, and makes ME jealous! I have returned to this book time and time again for inspiration.

A fantastic 'fluff' book

In the style of the Book of Nod (and Revelations of the Dark Mother) this book is written as if it was an actual book available in the (Old) World of Darkness. It is a reference book with details of practically every vampire mentioned in all of the Vampire: the Masquerade game books. It is well written and comprehensive.
It is black 'leatherbound' looking book with silver prinding and silver edged pages with a scarlet bookmark bound into it...so it's gorgeous to begin with. For the most part the artwork is just recycled from other books, so it's a mixed bag.
I passed up the opportunity to get this when it was first published because the original ad blurbs made it sound like a rules compendium or comprehensive index for other books...I only found out what it really was when it was already out of print.
I'm glad I got a second chance to get it at an acceptable price!

Best VTM book ever!!!

This book is writen like a real encyclopedia and has the most information of any white wolf supplement. It is writen by Aristotle, Lucida, and a few other noddist. THis book gives info on timelines of cities, major power players (such as Jan Pieterzoon, Myca/Sacha Vycos, Lucita, Anatole, Theo Bell, and the Methusalas.), and really anything else you could think of. My only complaint is that the information on the anarch revolt is a bit dodgy. It is worth it if you have an extra $100 to spend.

Justifiably, Medvedev, the great Marxist historian, has called this book "the main work of my life." His conclusions remain substantially the same as the first edition of this volume ( LJ 1/15/72). Stalin's terror was a "deliberate policy and not the results of some persecution mania"; he was possessed by "limitless ambition and limited ability," and was supported by "a majority of the Soviet people . . . backward enough to be deceived." Some may feel the author fails to connect all this to Soviet socialism today. Nevertheless, the new edition's strength lies in the voluminous new testimony and findings, such as the assertion that in 1934 Stalin's poor physical health caused Politboro "to name a possible successor Kirov." Indispensable for larger Soviet collections.

an historical gem that passed unnoticed

The original version of this book, published in 1972 by Alfred A Knopf, reflects the thinking of historian Roy A Medvedev in the period of August 1962 to August 1968. The revised and expanded 1989 version must first be examined in light of the original.

The original was translated by Colleen Taylor and edited by David Joravsky of Northwestern University. Medvedev couldn't get published in the USSR, and this work thus first appeared in the West. It was written primarily during the transition from Khrushev's anti-Stalinist reforms to Brezhnev's immanent social-imperialism.

August 1968 is also the month of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslavakia and the defeat of Dubcek's "socialism with a human face." This is also the period of Mao's Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution.

Stalin was as evil as Hitler, yet he rose to power in the first Socialist state. The Second World War played itself out as one totalitarian dictatorship in a death struggle with another, yet Stalin ended up through the course of events as an ally of the democratic and capitalist Anglo-American West in its life-or-death struggle against fascism.

Totalitarianism turns out to have been the big infatuation of the twentieth century intelligentsia. Medvedev represents Russia's awakening from this plague. He is wrong about so much, yet for his age he was so far ahead of his times.

This book is a classic, and I believe the original should be the preferred version. Stalin's terror is nearly beyond belief. It is tragic in a different way than Nazism; perhaps with consequences more evil.

If Leninism ever revives, this will be a classic, just as it is now in the wake of the Cold War defeat of Communism.

Passion overwhelms the writing

This book was the first in the Soviet Union to treat Stalin in an objective way. Prior to its release Stalin had been the great hero of the patriotic war the father of the country and so forth. Whilst the secret speech by Krushev had distanced the country from his system scholarship had not taken the step of subjecting his rule to objective analysis.
The author was a person who was an opponent of Stalin and prior to the fall of the regime was active in its criticism. The book goes through the issues associated with Stalin such as the decision to collectivize agriculture, the forced industrialization, the terror and the handling of the war. The author forms the view that Stalin was an unmitigated disaster. That is the country would have progressed economically better without him, and his handling of the war was catastrophic.
It is a good book to read with other western accounts such as Bullocks.

One of the best books for rheumatology fellows in training and rheumatologists

Excellent book! It is very well written,and comprehensive enough to include all important subjects and it is easy to read. I highly recommend this book to rheumatology fellows who are preparing for board exam. It is also good for medical students and residents interested in rheumatology, however it might be a little bit detailed for students or residents who are not considering rheumatology as their future subspeciality/career.

Best resource for rheumatology fellows and after!

If you are a rheumatology fellow, you need to own this. As a fellow I had the 2nd edition and i used it so much that it was in pieces. My husband periodically asks me if he can throw it out and I'd immediately say NO because it was no longer in print. Even though I'm not in training anymore, I still had to buy the new edition and it doesn't disappoint. It's a must have!! Don't think twice.
