About the Author
Rene Goscinny was born in Paris in 1926, and spent most of his childhood in Argentina, before eventually moving to Paris in 1951. He died in 1977. Albert Uderzo was born in 1927 in a small village in Marne, France. He met Rene Goscinny in 1951 and on 29 October 1959 their most famous creation, Asterix, made his first appearance on page 20 of Pilote. ASTERIX THE GAUL, their first album, was published in 1961 and there have now been 35 Asterix albums.

Asterix and the Banquet

What can I say? I buy the Asterix books for my middle school sons who adore them. They were first introduced to them when they were in grade school, by some friends from France. I was always an anti-comic book mom, but how can I complain when world history is thrown into the story? Both boys (ages 12 and 14) read and reread all of the titles we own. We have the paperback versions and the bindings are very sturdy and hold up to all the wear and tear and usage. They love 'em!

This lovely book- a visual delight- is basically a souvenir of France. Our two adventurers tour round the country, taking in all regional specialities and Uderzo illustrating scenic and recognisable landscapes.

The story itself is pretty weak, but you could not have designed a better tourist brochure for the country.

...I am very glad that I read [this] as I rather enjoyed it and found it very useful from a National Health Service (NHS) dispensing perspective and as a manager of an NHS audiology service. The clue is in the title- this book is about selling hearing aids- very much in a quality way. It takes you through the journey from first contact with the patient, gathering patient history and understanding their difficulties, conducting assessment, discussing the results and closing the sale. This book is packed with resources and references current and past research…Much use is made of the 'Bright Ideas' sections in the book which are tips on practice of concise summaries of the text. This helps break up what could have been a dry text but isn't. In fact, this book manages to perform a neat trick, in that it is far from simplistic in content but easy to read. It holds the attention to the end...I would recommend this book for any professional involved in the hearing aid dispensing process, especially those embarking on a career. About the Author
Brian Taylor, Au.D. is currently the Director of Practice Development & Clinical Affairs for Unitron. He is responsible for all best practice initiatives and customer loyalty programs for Unitron in the United States. Over the past 20 years he has dispensed hearing aids in both retail and medical settings, including Rockford Clinic and Sonus. Prior to his current position, he was the Director of Professional Development for Amplifon and served as their Global Training Manager in Milan, Italy.

Dr. Taylor has written and lectured extensively on several topics, including practice management and evidence-based hearing aid selection and fitting approaches. Brian holds an Au.D. from Central Michigan University and a master's degree in Audiology from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He currently resides in Minneapolis.

She had no idea what to expect when she left her parents' home and had to be told by other Amish who had escaped, how to live in a world of freedom where she could decide for herself how she wanted to live. She had to be told to shave her legs and underarms, to use deodorant, and that there were guidelines about how to dress even in the "English" world. The reader feels her excitement when she finally gets a truck and learns how to drive it. She also learns that all English are not to be trusted when she is raped and didn't even know what had happened to her. The Amish don't tell their girls anything about sex or life in general, they learn it when they need to know it. Young Amish women are pitifully unprepared for life. About the Author
Emma Gingerich left her Amish community in Eagleville, Missouri, at the age of eighteen. She went to south Texas, close to South Padre Island, where she lived for almost four years. She received her Associates Degree at a community college and transferred to Tarleton State University located in Stephenville, Texas, to complete her Bachelor’s Degree. She is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in business administration. Though Emma works full-time as a Billing Coordinator in the healthcare industry and is continuing her college education, she still managed to write her first memoir. She is looking forward to writing a sequel. Education is important to Emma, and she is happy to have the opportunity to attend college. She hopes to help and inspire other Ex-Amish people to receive an education as well. Her passions are: writing, hiking, traveling, running and helping others.

This book is a true account of Swartentruber Amish traditions & their religion.

I'm posting the rating on the book as a former Swartzentruber Amish perspective: The book is a must read to learn the true traditional Swartzentruber Amish family daily lives. The moment I started reading the book, I was hooked. It explains the hardships of what a young girl goes through if she chooses to leave the Amish. It is a very well written book with no bad or demeaning language, so you can even let your teenagers read it. I recommend this book for anyone that wants to know or learn more about the Amish life and the struggles of starting a new life in the English world.

Incredible Determination!

I read it in one sitting, and was amazed by the courage of this slip of an 18 yr old girl with only an 8th grade education! Speaking primarily German, she ran away from the harshly restrictive and puzzling Amish world in hopes of a better life. With very little help, and knowing next to nothing about the "English", she continued to follow her dreams while being shamed and criticized by the only friends and family she had ever known.

Without a birth certificate, drivers license or any proof of identity, she had many roadblocks along the way. To make matters worse, she was a repeated crime victim. But, refusing to be thwarted, she worked to support herself, studied for her GED, then went on to college, where she is now working toward her graduate degree! I have read several books by Amish authors, but this one rings more true to life than any other I've read. I wish this very strong, intelligent, young author the very best life has to offer. BUY THIS BOOK! You won't regret it!

This is the one to read

This book tells more about the Amish way of life, their so-called dating, what is expected of women, of men and of children, and thoroughly goes into the many reasons this young girl decided she had to get away from the Amish life in order to grow spiritually and go to college. She had no idea what to expect when she left her parents' home and had to be told by other Amish who had escaped, how to live in a world of freedom where she could decide for herself how she wanted to live. She had to be told to shave her legs and underarms, to use deodorant, and that there were guidelines about how to dress even in the "English" world. The reader feels her excitement when she finally gets a truck and learns how to drive it. She also learns that all English are not to be trusted when she is raped and didn't even know what had happened to her. The Amish don't tell their girls anything about sex or life in general, they learn it when they need to know it. Young Amish women are pitifully unprepared for life. I liked this book because the author wasn't afraid to tell the truth.

Ridiculous, unfounded, almost laughable explanation of the Amanda Knox trial...

After the first few pages, I had to actually go back to the cover to make sure this book wasn't a spoof. I find the author's psychiatric evaluation of both Amanda and Raffele to be absurd. He reaches FAR into some made up sense of rage and childhood scarring to create a motive. I don't even know which example to choose, they are all beyond intelligent rationalization. From Amanda holding a "peace" sign up in a picture (most kids and even some adults attempt to look "cool" by doing this, to her sudden ability to become a murderer with a man she just met, is baffling. There is no prior history of violence in either of their backgrounds, and to make up this long fictional story based on a subjective analysis of both Amanda and Raffelle's childhood experiences, without even meeting them or doing the professional testing to form such conclusions, is ridiculous and downright unethical. There was no DNA in Meredith's room from either of them. It is impossible to clean away invisible DNA, and from the story that the author tells, there is NO WAY they could have not left traces of their presence. This book lacks any scientific proof indicating their involvement. It is just a wildly imaginative story. I feel dumber after wasting my time reading this tabloid garbage. Skip this book if you want to read a serious, fact based analysis. It is pure fiction, nothing more.

Exploitative crap from an MD. No wonder he didn't get tenure.

Psychology is not much of a science. It gives us bromides, truisms, and 20-20 hindsight. The author of this book somehow got an MD though I noticed his career as a professor didn't get very far. Unfortunately most people are willing to believe total mumbo jumbo when the person speaking has a few letters after his name. The author claims to have invented a "thoughtprint" method by which he can "decode" the unconscious minds of criminals. He takes a stab at explaining it at the beginning and produces incoherent nonsense. He then launches into a narrative of how the murder of Meredith happened, with Amanda, Raffaele, and Rudy participating in an sadistic 'hazing' attack on Meredith that wasn't supposed to end in murder but did. His scenario goes way beyond the evidence though a number of commentators have proposed something similar. On a number of points his scenario is implausible. I get the feeling this guy is just going for the money. If you want a lurid read, you might like this but I lost confidence in the author after five or ten pages and found his pretensions insulting so I stopped reading.

I Read this book when I was a kid. I recognized the cover and bought it for my 7 year old boy. He's read it twice already and loves it.

Fun and not too scary

I have read this book to my kindergarten class and it brought much delight to my little listeners. The story of the green ribbon around Jenny's neck is always a favorite and I've had to order a new copy of the book because my original is so tattered.

The stories are just scary enough to elicit ooh's and aah's and "cool!" But considering what kids see on TV and in the movies these days, their tolerance level for scary things is a lot higher than when their teacher was a kid!

This is a fun book for families and classes to read together.

Loved this book when I was a child, and now bought a copy for my little ones to enjoy. My 7 year-old soon absolutely loves this book. Read it cover to cover the day I bought it.
