Finally found a Catholic "Total" Bible Commentary...been looking for one for years until this one was finally suggested to me. I owe that person a debt of gratitude if I can ever trace back to where this advice was given to me. Wish it were available in e format but it is about the size of my printed dictionary, larger than my NAB Catholic Study Bible when stuffing it into a bag it seems but not that much larger and thicker but it is somewhat...
I recommend this to any person seriously into bible studying or student.

So far, I find this Biblical Commentary very helpful with the Course I'm studying. It is a wonderful reference book but not one you begin on the first page and read through! It's scholarly and is laid out very satisfactorily.

Then, just when he thought he would fall off his chair and die of cuteness, Kevin came upon a picture of a boy in a wolf suit who was threatening to eat his mother. In another picture he was chasing his dog with a fork. This was somebody Kevin could relate to. He kept reading as the boy cavorted through the forest with big hairy monsters. Kevin loved it! The book was, of course, Where the Wild Things Are. From then on, Kevin wanted to illustrate children's books. Not cute children's books, but books for kids like him.

The book comes complete with over-the-top player introductions, savvy basketball terminology, a halftime look at ancient Greece, and more mythological references, asides, and bad puns than you can shake a caduceus at. The breezy, slightly chaotic, and intensely colored cartoon illustrations catch the speed of this fast-paced sport. Dressed in 20th-century uniforms, the players also wear accoutrements relating to their personas. For readers whose appetite for Greek mythology has been whetted, an author's note lists movies, books, and Web sites and suggests asking teachers and librarians for more information. O'Malley has found a new way to make mythology exciting in this wild contest that will find an audience among sports buffs and fans of Mount Olympus.

Their opponents are a team of famous "mortals"--Hercules, Theseus, and so on, and the announcers are a pair of cheesy commentators, complete with bad ties and sport coats worn over tunics. Predictably, the gods trounce the men, thanks to their unfair advantages: Poseidon creates a tidal wave; Zeus resorts to lightning bolts. The mortals fight back with strategies (a Trojan Horse, for example) drawn straight from literature. Inserted as the announcers' banter or in dialogue balloons, the brief text leaves much unexplained. Children still unfamiliar with Greek mythology may be more frustrated than amused by the references and in-jokes, but O'Malley's full-page drawings include hilarious caricatures and cartoon action that will probably get some laughs--even from kids who aren't clear about the specifics. "French Drawings: Clouet to Seurat" is a softbound catalogue of some of the French Drawings from the British Museum. The Introduction, written by Martin Royalton-Kisch, Senior Curator of the Department of Prints and Drawings, The British Museum, gives a brief history of the evolution of drawing in France. As the title suggests, the earliest examples are from Jean Clouet who worked mainly as a portraitist for the French court in 1516, and upon his death his son, Francois Clouet, took over his position at court around 1540. Many drawings in the catalogue, for example Jean Clouet's "Portrait of a Young Woman" were done as studies for paintings. Francois Clouet was apparently commissioned by Catherine de Medici to do portraits of her children, and "Portrait of King Charles IX as a Young Boy" is shown in the catalogue.

Antoine Watteau is represented in 18th century work. As with many French artists before him, his use of red and black chalk was very effective, as in "Five Studies of a Woman's Head, One Lightly Sketched." White chalk was also used for these drawings.

The 19th century shows various artists such as Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. His portrait of "Charles Hayard and his Daughter Marguerite, 1815" is done in graphite and shows the closeness of the father and daughter. Delacroix, Degas, Cezanne, Seurat and others are also among the 19th century artists.

Drawing #93 and final one is "Portrait of Marcelle Lender, c. 1893-95" by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
Each drawing in the book is given a full page and also a full page text of information about the artist and the drawing.

This is a very beautiful book that has good quality paper and also excellent quality reproductions on the pages. It is a book that I can never tire of reading and studying the artwork and even using to practice certain aspects of my own drawing. There are 95 works of art in the book, so there is a lot to study and read, but mostly to enjoy.

high quality and broad ranging catalogue of French drawings

The British Museum has a collection of around 3,500 French drawings; this catalogue presents 93 examples. It begins with a sensitive "Portrait of a Young Woman" by Jean Clouet (1480-1540) and ends with a charming "Portrait of Marcelle Lender" by Toulouse-Lautrec. Between are a succession of uniformly excellent drawings by artists familiar and unfamiliar. The former include works by Poussin, Lorrain (5), Watteau (4), Fragonard, Ingres, Corot and Degas.

It is sometimes the case that an exhibition has a few star pieces with the rest being second rate. This is certainly not the case with this British Museum survey; even the drawings by less familiar drawers are of high merit and interest. The quality of the reproductions and printing in general is well above average. Highly recommended.
