Required reading for intermediate to advanced investors.

Okay, so the title of the book leaves something to be desired, but that is the ONLY part of this book that falls short. Joel Greenblatt has written an excellent book on profiting from special situations. That's fortunate for the rest of us, since so far as I can tell, this is the ONLY book that provides an overview of event-driven investing. Note that I said "overview"--it's by no means definitive, nor does it claim to be. Certainly more rigorous treatments of risk arbitrage exist. However, this is the only book I'm aware of that is dedicated to explaining merger securities, spinoffs, recapitalizations, bankruptcy and yes, risk arbitrage.
The book's format is well thought out: each chapter explains the how and why of investing in one particular corporate event, and then utilizes case studies to ram the point home. The case studies are interesting, reading at times like a novel. The tone is lighthearted and endearing throughout, and the frequent jokes, although usually kitschy, hit the mark nonetheless. (One gem: "There are three types of people in the world--those who can count, and those who can't.")
This book is not for everyone, however. Beginners should first read Peter Lynch, Ben Graham, and Phillip Fisher before tackling this one. Greenblatt assumes a reasonable degree of comfort with financial statements and value investing strategies on the part of the reader. The use of LEAPS and options in special situations is covered, but should be avoided by all save for the most advanced investors (as per the author's advice). Also, professionals working in the field of event-driven investments would probably find little they did not already know. That being said, the book reads quickly, so a pro would be little disadvantaged for reading it.
Finally, it's nice to know that the author can walk the walk as well as talk the talk. Greenblatt publishes his firm's audited returns over a ten-year period at the end of the book, and they are out of this world. We're talking an average annual return of 50% for ten years. This book is not a case of "Those who can, do; those who can't, teach." Greenblatt can, and he does.

Practical Advice for Sophisticated Special Situations Investing

This book is for those who cannot resist the idea of wanting to outperform the market averages. For most people, that's dumb idea . . . and indexed mutual funds would be a better choice.

But if you are willing to roll up your sleeves, put on your green eyeshade and look at things differently, Mr. Greenblatt's approach is a very valid one.

If you read only one of Mr. Greenblatt's books about investing (the other one is The Little Book That Beats the Market), read this one. You'll make more money with this one.

You can be a Stock Market Genius has the simplest explanation for special situations investing involving unusual securities that I have seen for the lay person.

For most people, this book will be a lot to chew on. I suggest that you start by simply trying to understand and apply one idea in the book . . . such as finding under priced small spin-off stocks. After you get the handle on that one, go on to another approach that interests you.

I have worked for over three decades helping companies design these new securities that fascinate Mr. Greenblatt so much. From that experience, I'm constantly amazed at how stupidly most corporate finance departments and investment banks pursue these new structures. I suspect that the answer is that the heavy brainpower is saved for more profitable work like M&A.

As a result, you will almost always find a great investment opportunity if you look at unusual securities. I encourage you to begin by spending a half hour getting the background on any unusual transaction you read about.

You can also improve on this book by doing more precise measurements of securities values (if you have the background to do that), but for many severely undervalued securities Mr. Greenblatt's approach of taking guesses about what a reasonable value is will work just fine.

Although the examples are older, these kinds of opportunities still abound in most categories he discusses (stub stocks are the exception). Mr. Greenblatt has a real talent for putting his cases together to make them easier to understand.

Terrific Read Despite the Schleppy Title

This is an amazingly generous roadmap to lesser-known corners of the securities market. When I first picked it up about 2 years ago, I was terribly disappointed because all the strategies Greenblatt describes require a fair amount of WORK and careful thought --and it was my impression that "Stock Market Genius" entailed effortless wizardry! But the work is contagious and engaging (like digging for buried treasure, as aptly described by Joel Greenblatt).
Despite the book's schleppy and seemingly unrealistic title, Greenblatt's descriptions are wonderfully realistic and honest. In particular, although I've looked for other resources on spinoff investment strategies, everything you really need to know is in this book. The author's style is flippant but endearing, and the reader will get more than his/her money's worth from the ideas described in this book.

About the Author
Gregory N. Brown: In Greg Brown's book "The Savvy Flight Instructor" the author's love for flying is obvious in every chapter, as is his concern for the image of the flight instructor and flight school: that they perform the best they can to seek out, promote, and sustain the joy of flight for the good of the entire industry. In keeping with his role as general aviation advocate, Greg hosts the "Aviation Careers Forum" and the "New Pilots Forum" on America Online, and serves as a Contributing Editor for Flight Training magazine. He has entertained and educated aviation audiences as a speaker since 1990, most recently as presenter for NATA's acclaimed Flight School Training Manager Seminars.
 
An active practitioner of the noble art of flight instructing since 1979, Greg has also served as a professional pilot in both scheduled and corporate aviation, and flown extensively for pleasure and personal business. His teaching background also includes service as faculty member at Purdue University, regular presentations at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and numerous professional seminars.
 
Greg Brown earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where his graduate work included human-factors cockpit design at the Aviation Research Laboratory. He studied for two years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and completed several advanced flight ratings at Purdue University. He holds an ATP pilot certificate with Boeing 737 type rating, and Flight Instructor certificate with all fixed wing aircraft ratings including glider. Greg also holds Advanced and Instrument Ground Instructor ratings, and has been active as a pilot since 1971. He was also honored with the "2000 Industry/FAA National Flight Instructor of the Year" award.
 
Greg's most recent publication is Flying Carpet: The Soul of an Airplane which includes stories from his long-running column in Flight Training magazine. Other popular aviation books by Greg include: The Turbine Pilot's Flight Manual, and Job Hunting for Pilots.

Mark J. Holt: Mark J. Holt, a pilot for a major airline who has logged over 15,000 hours in his 30 years of flying, holds an ATP certificate with Boeing 757/767 and BAE Jetstream 41 type ratings, and a Flight Engineer (Turbojet), and flight/ground instructor certificates. Mr. Holt soloed at age 16 and his professional flying career includes extensive flight and ground instructing experience and service as a check airman for a large Part 121 regional airline. Mark also served nine years as an electronics/radar technician for the U.S. Air Force Air National Guard. Mark is co-author of The Turbine Pilot's Flight Manual and Air Carrier Operations.

Book is good. Printing is...not so great, but readable.

The book itself is great. Very helpful for someone transitioning into turbine aircraft.
It covers a lot of subjects that a turbine pilot may need to know about but manages to do it in a very general way so that most of the book is helpful to you no matter what type of turbine aircraft you are going to be flying.

The only issue I have is that many of the pages are sort of...partway double printed? If that makes sense.
I've added a photo to show an example of what I'm talking about.

The first time I came across it, I thought my eyes were going blurry or I was having a stroke or something.
I looked away and nothing else looked doubled, then looked at the top of the page and it was fine. It was just the bottom 1/4 of the page or so.
I showed someone else to make sure I wasn't seeing things. They verified the partial double printing.

The double print issue isn't a HUGE deal, but be ready for it because it can be a little bit scary at first. After you realize what it is, then it's just annoying. It's not the entire book by any means, but I wish it wasn't there at all. I don't know if all of the books are like this, or just mine, but be prepared to see it so you don't get freaked out by it.

Required reading for trasitioning military pilots!

Better turbine engine explanations, descriptions, and diagrams than the military pubs I've been studying for the last 17+ years! This book and everything explained for the professional pilot are key for any military pilot to transition to the civilian market. I just got hired and my interviewer was very impressed with my turbine engine knowledge!

About the Author

Andy Neely is Director of the Centre for Business Performance at Cranfield School of Management, Professor of Operations Strategy and Performance and Managing Partner of The Performance Practice. Prior to joining Cranfield Andy held a lecturing position at Cambridge University, where he was a Fellow of Churchill College. He has been researching and teaching in the field of business performance measurement and management since the late 1980s and also co-ordinates the PMA, an international network for those interested in thesubject.

Andy has authored over 100 books and articles, including "Measuring Business Performance," published by the Economist. He is widely recognized as one of the world's leading authorities on performance measurement and brings a wealth of practical experience to his teaching and research, derived from his experiences as a consultant to numerous global organizations.

Best Book on Self-Publishing that I have ever read.

There are a lot of great things I could say about this book. It's funny. It's informative. Rather than going through a bullet point list of its many merits, let me focus on the quality that I enjoyed most.

The best thing about this book, to me, is that it is devoted to teaching you how to think. You won't find screenshots teaching you how to format your files for the different online retailers or step-by-steps walking you through how to fill out a product description. The advice in this book will not only help you today, but years from now. I feel confident saying that because the focus is on how to approach situations. It will show you what type of thinking and the attitude you should as you try to build a career. They will teach you how to CREATE opportunities (they are serious about the 'no luck' part) for yourself.

In this book, Sean, Johnny and Dave advocate a systemic and repeatable approach that takes the guesswork out of being an author. The work ethic and can-do attitude that fills every page appeals to me so much. It's inspirational and motivational. Reading the book really makes you believe that it's possible to approach a writing career as a business person instead of that guy risking everything on a roll of the dice. You don't have to hope and pray that you get lucky. There is a line in the early part of the book that says: "Success comes from hard work and the accumulation of small numbers." That is such an awesome sentence, but more than that, it's an awesome philosophy.

Ultimately, that's what this book is about. It teaches you how to win a lot of small battles that have the cumulative effect of leading you to a life of victory. If you want to learn how to make it as a self-published author, do yourself a favor and buy this book. Read this book and keep it close by so you can read it again.

Long-winded, Self-Indulgent, Not for Romance Authors

I've read several books on self-publishing and I've picked up several tips from most all of them. The best tip I got from this one is to put links for your other books in the back of the book. Gee! Brilliant, right? Reading this book I felt like I was listening to a bunch of guys sitting around enjoying hearing themselves talk. Ad nauseum. Guys who are quite in love with themselves and super proud of the fact that they wouldn't get a real job even if their family needed them to (I feel so sorry for their wives.) They even spent a whole chapter on social media telling us why they aren't going to talk about social media. (because they don't know anything about it. Hello, that could have been said in a sentence, not a whole chapter.) This book desperately needed a good editor, preferably one outside their "fan club."

I am sure that fans of their podcast will LOVE this book, and that is their audience. But if you are looking to publish romance this is not the book for you. Why? One of the authors of the book on self-publishing romance tells us she makes 30% of her income from foreign markets while these guys say - foreign markets aren't worth your time. Don't bother. Really? In this global economy with the increase expected in eBook sales in India? Really? They continually talk about their slutty friend (their words, not mine) who writes erotica, but rather than offering us any gems one can use (besides FREE books, another brilliant tidbit), it comes off more like an episode of Beavis & Butthead develop a crush on the cheerleader next door with the bad reputation. These guys sound like they are very successful authors and I wish them all the best. I just won't be reading any more of their books. Not for me.

IMO, the best book on self-publishing.

I have a pretty popular blog on self-publishing, and I've written a couple of books on the topic myself - meaning I've read a lot on the topic and come across lots of different strategies and approaches to building a loyal audience. For my money, this is the best book on self-publishing out there.

It doesn't matter if you are a beginner, someone who has published a few books, or have a lot of experience, you will get a huge amount from this book, which is jam-packed with all sorts of useful information. It's like a How To on how to build a publishing empire. I had several lightbulb moments reading this book, and I know you will too.

These guys know what they are talking about, they have published millions of words, self-published to great success, sold a series to Amazon, and built a loyal readership that will follow them anywhere.

And they tell you how to do it too. Do yourself a favor and grab a copy.

EDIT: I received an ARC of this book, but without any agreement to review, let alone give any certain type of review. I receive tons of ARCs all the time and most never even get read, let alone reviewed...

Reds at the Blackboard showcases the rise of a unique type of unionism that would later dominate the organizational efforts behind civil rights, academic freedom, and the empowerment of blacks and Latinos. Through its affiliation with the Communist Party, the union pioneered what would later become social movement unionism, solidifying ties with labor groups, black and Latino parents, and civil rights organizations to acquire greater school and community resources. It also militantly fought to improve working conditions for teachers while championing broader social concerns. For the first time, Taylor reveals the union's early growth and the somewhat illegal attempts by the Board of Education to eradicate the group. Reds at the Blackboard, Clarence Taylor's superb history of the left-led New York City Teachers' Union (1916-1964), fills a void in the historical record of teacher unionism and education in the United States, providing important background on recurring controversies of curriculum, due process, academic freedom, testing, transfers, community involvement, civil rights, and the need for more Black and Latino teachers. This meticulously researched and insightful history of an important social justice union contributes significantly to our understanding of Civil Rights and left history, and it offers important background on the rise of the United Federation of Teachers and the 1968 New York City teacher strikes and community control struggles. It is a timely contribution to the current climate of growing economic depression, persistent racial disparities, war, educational crises, charter schools, and often fractured teacher union and community relations.

Clarence Taylor is professor of history and black and Latino studies at Baruch College and professor of history at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. He has written or edited several books, including The Black Churches of Brooklyn and Knocking at Our Own Door: Milton A. Galamison and the Struggle to Integrate New York City Schools.

A Revealing Look at Origins of Unionism in the Schools

Anyone who wants to understand urban teacher unions cannot miss this eye-opening, sometimes startling book. The recent rise of "social justice" currents in Chicago, L.A. and other teacher locals is nothing new. It is a repeat of the developments Taylor vividly recounts here. Clear, and compelling reading.
