Tiny font

I guess they wanted to fit a lot of material into a small book so they made the font tiny. It looks like an 8pt font to me which makes it hard on the eyes after a long period of time.

The included software is quite helpful and I recommend having the software open as you read. Personally I found it helpful to use the QM software to do the problems in each chapter as I was reading.

None of the math in this book is much beyond algebra but there are a LOT of equations. Heaven help you if you have an instructor that expects you to memorize them all for exams.

Also, on mine, they put the cover on backwards. It isn't really a big deal but considering how much I paid for this book I think they should get the cover on correctly.

FAMILY HISTORY AND JAZZ BEAUTIFULLY RENDERED

In this highly readable and deeply personal account, music, specifically jazz, is explored as the conduit by which immigrants from the Indian state of Goa created community in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, during the 1950s and 60s. The author's father worked for Barclays Bank by day and played the accordion by night. Jerry Luis and his fellow Jazz Swingers members regularly took the stage at the Ocean Breeze, the city's most popular restaurant and nightclub. There, in snazzy suits and bow ties, the musicians played "Take the A Train," "Bye, Bye Blackbird," and other favorites to the delight of their audiences which drew from a number of Tanzania's social clubs. East Africa was once home to hundreds of social, sporting and cultural associations including at least four Goan clubs in Dar es Salaam as well as Greek, Portuguese, Scottish and Italian associations -- many of whom gathered to dance to the melodies of the Jazz Swingers."Waiting for Sunrise" also explores the monumental changes that Tanzania, a British territory and racially segregated country, underwent in the years before and after 1961 when it gained its independence. These shifts are examined by the author through the lens of the Goan community and the Jazz Swingers. The book ends with a chapter on the author's own musical journey as a blues performer.Toward the end of the book, the author reflects that, "With every few exceptions, musicians in Dar functioned somewhat in a vacuum, generally playing with their own ethnic or racial groups. This was so different from my own musical experience in the U.S., which helped to reinforce the notion that while we may be different, we are all connected." Family history and jazz meld wonderfully in this highly recommended account.

About the Author

HIROSHI OZAWA is an associate professor at the Science University of Tokyo and Kendo kyoshi, 7th dan. He was born in Saitama prefecture in 1950 into a highly respected Kendo family which was instrumental in incorporating Kendo into the physical education curriculum as a core subject. He makes regular trips abroad to demonstrate and teach Kendo, and also writes books about samurai ethics.

Very good

I own both the Complete Kendo book and the Heart of Kendo book.
This book is by far better than the other 2 as far as providing technical information.

Pros:
- The pictures are much better drawn (at least when compared to the other 2 books). Still in some cases a photo would have been more useful.
- The section on kata is presented as numbered steps in 2 columns, one for uchidachi and the other for shidachi. This makes it much easier to understand.
- Many of the movements are described as numbered lists. The other 2 books I looked at just write long paragraphs of text making it very difficult to decipher, even after you've learned the movement in class.
- Goes thru a complete treatment on how to put on the equipment.
- Extensive coverage of waza.

Cons:
- The information in the book is not ordered in the same order as you would learn things in a Kendo class so you will need to hop around chapters.
- Sadly there is no index in this book either. I don't quite understand why in this day and age books don't have indices. All 3 Kendo books I own do not have them.
- The descriptions are rather brief so it reads more like a manual than a book.
- The sections on suburi describe that you should swing "big". So in most of the diagrams the shinai is shown drawn all the way behind and almost touching the person's back (even in shomen suburi). What the book does not say though is that this is intended initially to train beginners to swing big. But when you actually perform a strike you generally aren't supposed to swing that far behind your back. But I am nitpicking...
- Book does not cover equipment maintenance.
- There is some use of terms that are not defined in the book.
- Book does not explain how to put himos onto men.

I would recommend getting this book in addition to one of the other 2 books to fill in some missing gaps. However even after owning all 3 books I find none of them cover the full body of knowledge that a beginner encounters. So these books are no substitute for a real class (obviously).

More than just technique...

The path of the sword is not taken lightly. It involves practice, improvment and confidence in the technique. This book is a good way to get you started. It covers basic techniques, ettiquette, terms and some very good advice. I would recommend this book along with "Iai, the art of drawing the sword" by Darrel Craig as these books compliment each other very well.

Higly Recommended for Beginners.

As a beginner in Kendo this book has definately been helpful. Because the Japanese terms (or words) are used throughout the book it has helped me retain them (I couldn't seem to remember them when learned in the Dojo). It's filled with illustrations, however, I don't think any pictures could illustrate the moves enough. These illustrations combined with what you learn in the Dojo (or on video) should be sufficient, they are definately better than most. In the appendix is good information (and rules) on official Kendo tournaments. I'd say it's a must-have book for anyone new to the sport.
Topics that I would have liked to see, but does not include: There is nothing on the care and maintenance of the Bogu or Shinai, or how to select the proper equipment. There is nothing on testing and advancement (Kyu to Dan), although perhaps this varies from Dojo to Dojo anyway. I would have liked to see a chapter on Iaido as well (however, this is because Iaido is an essential part of our Dojo's Kendo training, this may not be the case with all Dojos).
Overall a great book. If you're looking for a book on Kendo and don't have this one, get it, you won't be sorry.

More of a basic calligraphy book

This book didn't really work for what I bought it for - handdrawn fonts. It's called "Hand Lettering" but its really a calligraphy book. Calligraphy uses special markers or pens with slanted nibs. I wasn't looking for any calligraphy info, only typefaces that I could re-create by drawing them by hand. I found a lot of the artwork and examples a little dated....like something you would be taught in a high school calligraphy class. I also bought Scrapbooker's Handwriting Workshop which was more helpful - it has lots of typefaces/fonts that are suitable for copying by hand.

Hand Lettering

This is a particularly wonderful book. I am a novice calligrapher and have been practicing italic handwriting for several years. Once I started using this book, I am writing many different kinds of alphabets, all useful in my card making hobby. The authors are excellent teachers (I wish I could take classes from them), and their instructions are easy to follow. This is the best calligraphy book I have ever seen, and I have bought it as a gift for others.

What a fun book...it's VERY newbie friendly...I have hand lettered for years but
wanted to see what was new out there, and there were a few fun alphabets that I had
not seen before. There are MANY ideas for someone new to hand lettering, lots of
great full color photos of things to make, where to use the alphas, and of course
directions on HOW to make the letters. It really is geared towards a new-2-letting
person, but I am keeping it cause you never can have too many fun art related books,
can you???

An Intense Journey With A Climactic Ending

When Sonny finds the claim, he feels something strange around him and wonders how much of Dennis's tale was true. But creepy feelings aren't enough to stop Sonny, especially when he discovers that the "silver" is really an unusually pure mass of platinum.

The claim is purchased by Earthcore, a company led by a cutthroat named Connell Kirkland. Connell has lost all emotion after the death of his wife, making him an icy, deadly adversary in the corporate world of mining. He'll let nothing and no one stand in his way, even going so far as to hire ex-NSA "interrogator" Kayla Meyers to seek out the truth of the Wah Wah claim. Kayla is beautiful and deadly, and has a true passion for her work.

Connell assembles a team of the best-of-the-best in their fields for the initial exploration of Earthcore's new find, using utmost secrecy to avoid the competition getting wind of the vast platinum mine. He hires Dr. Angus Kool, a genius with three PhD's, a scientist who's sociopathic behavior goes far beyond his arrogance. Joining Angus is his assistant, Dr. Randy White, also rated in the genius range. Mack Hendricks, an Australian Engineer, is pulled off a current dig to join Connell's crew. Running security for Earthcore is Patrick O'Doyle, an ex-assassin from the military, a hard, scarred man who takes his job more seriously than his own life. Crashing the party, to protect un-explored cave systems, are archeologist Dr. Veronica Reeves and her mentor/father figure Sanji Haak, who've been written up in Nation Geographic for their similar dig in the mountains of Argentina. With a surprisingly sophisticated base camp established outside the vast cave and tunnel systems that lead toward the dense mass of platinum, the exploration begins. Sonny, on-site as part of his monetary agreement with Connell, suddenly wishes he'd stayed away. The longer he stays near the Wah Wah's (which he'd christened Funeral Mountain) the more uneasy and fearful he's become. Sonny and Cho have dug up the past of Funeral Mountain, and found nothing but failure and death. Nevertheless, he's unable to stop Connell and his Earthcore party from entering the mountain. All are in danger, and not all will make it out alive. There's something alive down there, and it doesn't like visitors.

Sigler has written a fantastic sci-fi thriller. Starting as a podcast, Earthcore was later published as a book. Contrary to what other reviewers have said, the characters are not weak but fully fleshed individuals, each with their own virtues and flaws. The environment is painted so real that I could feel the heat, feel the claustrophobia of the tunnels. The book is very fast-paced, the ending so exciting you won't be able to put it down once you've reached the last 100 pages. I was deeply fascinated by the race discovered below, and mesmerized by their evolution. The intense race to return to the surface left me breathless, biting my nails as I read on. Sigler is a remarkable new author, definitely one to watch out for. Pick up a copy of Earthcore for the ride of your life. I highly recommend this book. Enjoy!

Must read for anyone into Sc-Fi, Monsters and adventure!

WOW!! My first impression 50 pages into this book was "WOW" and that did not change one iota after finishing it. After reading Contagion and it's predecessor by Scott Sigler, I could not wait to get my hands on anything else written by him. Earthcore is incredibly hard to find a copy of - especially if you want it both in English and at an affordable price, but it is absolutely worth the effort and the inflated used book price. (This is coming from someone who tries to never pay more than $10 for ANY book) I blew through this book in a day and half - I could not put it down and found myself walking down the hall reading with one eye and walking with the other eye. The action is insistent and anxiety driven with tiny little breathers spaced far and between - much like those the characters received. The characters that you assume will lead you through the adventure twist and change and by the final chapter you really haven't a clue who will be left standing and who will be taken - violently, screaming all the way. While a few other reviewers have described this book as scary or horrific, I would hesitate to use those words.... Earthcore is more along the lines of constant anxiety and a nagging feeling of something stalking you just beyond the edge of your vision.

This book reminded me of "Descent" (by Jeff Long I think) from some years back. It has a similar theme, but Earthcore is no knock off of "Descent" and stands on it's own fair and square. Earthcore was still rattling around in my head hours after finishing it and I sorely wished I had a sequel to follow up with. Totally a must read!!

Demonic Depths

This fast-paced horror-science fiction romp is an exciting and non-stop action story. I enjoy such things, trying to create something of the same mood in Season of the Plant, although I come nowhere near the skill of this author. I have a background in geology, have gone into unexplored caves, and can relate to the excitement and mystery which surround plumbing the depths of our planet. What these explorers discover, however, is a wonderfully amazing and horrifying one. Well described, action to the last page, with primary characters unfortunately flawed (especially the protagonists) which make the book really worthwhile in the long run.
As in Ancestor, which I read prior to this work, the author creates a villain who epitomizes all the qualities which create endless concern for others to the very end.

Die Verwandlung, Metamorphosis, is a novella by Franz Kafka, first published in 1915. About the Author
Franz Kafka was born to Jewish parents in Bohemia in 1883. Kafka s father was a luxury goods retailer who worked long hours and as a result never became close with his son. Kafka s relationship with his father greatly influenced his later writing and directly informed his Brief an den Vater (Letter to His Father). Kafka had a thorough education and was fluent in both German and Czech. As a young man, he was hired to work at an insurance company where he was quickly promoted despite his desire to devote his time to writing rather than insurance. Over the course of his life, Kafka wrote a great number of stories, letters, and essays, but burned the majority of his work before his death and requested that his friend Max Brod burn the rest. Brod, however, did not fulfill this request and published many of the works in the years following Kafka s death of tuberculosis in 1924. Thus, most of Kafka s works were published posthumously, and he did not live to see them recognized as some of the most important examples of literature of the twentieth century. Kafka s works are considered among the most significant pieces of existentialist writing, and he is remembered for his poignant depictions of internal conflicts with alienation and oppression. Some of Kafka s most famous works include The Metamorphosis, The Trial and The Castle.

and in this case that is a good thing! If he had written detective novels

A classic for a reason. Kafka's writing style reminds me a little bit of the Russians, and in this case that is a good thing! If he had written detective novels, I'm convinced he would have been one of the greatest such authors of all time - and a whole lot more popular besides. Instead, he chose to write about more powerful and perhaps important themes. The Metamorphosis will make you think about compassion, morality, and how we treat our fellow man.
